I have been working at Suncor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very good at retaining employees especially during downturns. Best Oil and Gas Canadian 2017 assessment by LinkedIn. Very good retirement/pension packages.

    Cons

Individual leadership based approach rather than system based. To move up in the organization ,you need to tag along a leader that likes you rather performance based.

    Advice to Management

More diversity at the top is required to move the company to become a global player like Shell, Total, Exxon etc.

I worked at Suncor full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Well lead Operation teams; Very supportive of functional areas; Amazing asset base and a strong future.

    Cons

Finance leadership is lacking; No longer a "people" focused company as it was a few short years ago; Senior leadership needs to change as they are no longer people focused.

    Advice to Management

Make an effort is get new blood into senior finance roles - Director and above; All that leadership group has done is clean out experienced Mgr level leaders and destroy morale within the Controllers group.

I have been working at Suncor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits. Pay. Coworkers. Gym. Vacation allocation.

    Cons

Mid level leadership do not lead - they protect their position by not making waves. By not leading their teams, they leave everyone to duke it out with each other. Really unhealthy mentally for all reports.

    Advice to Management

Remove Direct level layer. Managers should report and have direct relationship with VP level.

I have been working at Suncor full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work schedule, good pay, long term job security, nice camp.

    Cons

Very poor management. Leadership skills are lacking in many frontline positions that decrease moral. Benefits are not very good.

    Advice to Management

Have a third party company assess all your front line leaders and remove those who display derailing behaviours

I worked at Suncor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Largest oil company in Canada where an employer is able to develop professionally through experience from world class professionals

    Cons

As may be found in other organizations, your progress and job security depends wholly on your leader and not the HR department irrespective of your yearly performance.

    Advice to Management

The above cons should be viewed seriously for a remedy, to save so many hardworking employees, who may be victims of unfair treatment by their leaders

I worked at Suncor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good salary and compensation incentives.

    Cons

Work environment is poor, I have witnessed preferential treatment due to friendships, and employees wishing to learn more and better themselves not given opportunity.

The self assessment that bonuses are based off of are not fact checked and I have had other employees admit to me that they fluff their assessments up so they can get a good bonus.

People look after themselves. Speaking up about changing something for the better will get you negative attention. Better to be silent and keep your head down, or be a "yes man".

Instead of proper training on systems such as SAP, other user interfaces tend to be made to try and make things simpler. Knowledge passed on from person to person leading to broken systems and inconsistencies.

    Advice to Management

Throwing money at problems does not solve them. Take a look at the culture and make sure the right people are there.
