I worked at Santa Fe Tobacco Company full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Learned how to be a true salesman (building relationships, data analysis, etc). Very organized company that knew for the most part where their bread was buttered (Sales Team)

    Cons

Politics. From friends that are still with SFNTC, the RJRT merger has changed a lot of things. Good ole boys mentality. Huge racial scandal within Sales Force in which many where fired but not enough. Company tried to sweep incident under the rug.

    Advice to Management

Why bother, they move to the beat of their own drum

I worked at Santa Fe Tobacco Company full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Had a great time building collaborative relationships to drive the business over the years.

    Cons

Promotion to management is many instances unfair and nepotism based at times. Try to sell the idea of succession to employees, but in the end its favs being played. Large territories and many nights on the road. Culture needs a reboot. Certain region managers lack credibility and attack when they don't feel in total control of every situation.

    Advice to Management

Hold Region and Sr. Management accountable for nepotistic promotional practices.

I worked at Santa Fe Tobacco Company

    Pros

    - 401K Benefits - Health Benefits - Company Car - Partial Tuition Reimbursement

    Cons

    - Very Low Pay - Not Challenging - Large Geography

    Advice to Management

Lower infield expectations. Stop trying to compete in the big tobacco area with only one brand and 13 SKUs. You can't expect for sales reps to reach KPI's with out offering an incentive program to retailers and Key Accounts. Stop training employee on "Personally Development" and focus on "Professional Development".

    Pros

Great benefits, including robust training around soft and technical skills. Opportunities for advancement, significantly increased by willingness to relocate. Openness to feedback at all levels. Last but not least, career development support for those encompassing a strong drive to achieve business results and willingness to improve/learn/grow. Growth brand with values tied to sustainability and community enrichment.

I have been working at Santa Fe Tobacco Company full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The company has great benefits and their training is amazing. The atmosphere is great when it comes to your coworkers and how the company does team building activities. They are big about giving back to the earth.

    Cons

In order to move up with this company you must be able to move. Management could use more training on how to handle their employees better to have a better retention rate. The amount of territory you have to cover is a lot compared to other companies, so you spend a lot of time on the road.

    Advice to Management

Hire people in the area that they live so that you don't have such a big turn over rate. People are more happy when they are living in an area they have lived or grown up in.

I worked at Santa Fe Tobacco Company full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Company car, cell phone and Internet allowance, independence from supervisor is great. Your boss can make or break your experience. I had a great boss who left for another job, the next guy was horrible.

    Cons

Company goals completely unrealistic. They apply a one size fits all to all reps. Management pretty ineffective and are hypocrites at times. Lots of company meetings and retreats which are boring but less boring than the monotony of day to day They will fire you over the smallest of mistakes.

    Advice to Management

Corporate culture where the top brass are completely out of touch with the field reps. Practice what you preach. Promote employees quicker instead of bringing in people from RJ Reynolds.
