Great company, but Dublin office is far too political

Jun 16, 2021 - Software Engineer in Dublin, Dublin

      Pros

      - Lots of interesting problems to solve. - Very smart engineering teams, with relatively few rotten apples making it through the hiring process. - Time and effort being allocated to upgrade and/or replace legacy components, slowly but steadily. This didn't use to be the case, but the results of this work are paying off and making for a much more pleasant developer experience. - Great degree of autonomy. Whether you just want to take on tickets and finish them off and be left alone outside working hours, or you really want to take ownership of something from the design stage all the way through to completion, there is plenty of opportunity for both depending on what you are looking for here. - Long-time employees in the Dublin office are getting a lot better at acknowledging that certain parts of the system are just not good and need to be fixed/replaced, whereas a few years ago there was more of a "don't insult my baby!" mentality. - Engineers and teams as a whole get a lot of flexibility to work whatever way suits them best, so long as they manage to meet their goals. If there is a feeling that a particular way of working within the team that doesn't work very well, a lot of the time all that is needed is a verbal agreement among the members of the team in order to get things changed. - In general engineers are given the flexibility to move around teams and projects as they see fit. - There is a friendly, welcoming and informal culture in the office where someone is always willing to help you out or explain something to you. The office is also very diverse yet there are relatively few culture clashes. - Very good benefits package

      Cons

      - Career progression happens either smoothly or gets turned into a long drawn-out bureaucratic process, depending on whether specific managers like you personally, seemingly regardless of ability. Being moved around teams/managers also seems to significantly hinder this process. - Talk about your salary among your colleagues. Some people are getting severely screwed over, and I guarantee you the management cannot be trusted when it comes to this. The only ones that stand to gain from the taboo are managers. - Forever playing catch-up with end-of-life runtime and framework versions. You'd think as a security company they'd be more concerned about this. Aside from the security side of things, it's also just very much not enjoyable to have to work on services that rely on frameworks for which support ended and documentation went offline over 5 years ago. - The clique. Everyone who has worked here for any reasonable length of time will have at least a rough idea of who or what I'm talking about here. - There is a huge degree of "not invented here" syndrome within the company as a whole. Internal competition can be good, but in reality what this actually seems to result in most of the time is hostility and grudges between offices. Within the office itself this has also resulted in a lot of hand-rolled solutions and wrappers around other solutions to problems that the industry has already solved.

Great environment to grow as an engineer, feels like management are there for you rather than you there for them, always making sure that you're happy in the work place. Interesting technologies being used too

You're graded on your work, not appearances

      Pros

      - Brilliant engineering managers who give timely feedback, mentor well and keep you in the loop - Amazing events organized by Workplace Experience Coordinators - Great higher level management - Engineers are given time and resources to address technical debt - No micro-management; what matters is the work you deliver - Very flexible work-hours; as long as you attend your meetings and get your work done, no questions are asked - Realistic expectations meaning amazing work-life balance and low stress; if you so choose it (there's always more work to be done) - Great testing approach (TDD) which means high velocity and confidence in product along with frequent deployments - Great compensation and benefits: RSUs with frequent vesting, ESPP, yearly bonus, good life/health insurance, pension plan with great employee matching on contributions - Generally all great engineers in the office (few bad apples who have no attention to detail or aren't good collaborators or sadly both) - Engineers own the technical side, if you want to change anything you can as long as you get your pull request reviewed

      Cons

      - There's A LOT of legacy components and a lot of work to be done to be able to scale more efficiently and addressing technical debt - Office politics: if you're not liked by a clique of people at the top you're probably screwed, you'll have a toxic employment and have people talking behind your back, there's certainly a few people you want to avoid as much as possible

      Pros

''''from the first day we met, it felt right then and even more so now. Great people, teamwork, a 'work hard/play hard' environment, look after each other, very open, very rewarding. The company, senior management, all the staff have really stepped up to the mark during the current virus outbreak, looking out for each other and our customers.

      Cons

The 'play hard' bit has been curtailed at the moment due to the pandemic and no travel, we miss it and look forward to getting together again soon.

      A more than positive experience

Mar 28, 2020 - Software Engineer in Dublin, Dublin

      Pros

      - Recent tech stack - Flexible hours - Amazing Management - Good benefits - Very competitive salary - Defined career progression path - interesting work - Great culture. CEO + the others are very involved and very down to earth Honestly, I would highly recommend this place.

      Cons

      - Work/life balance is somewhat difficult to manage, but that's mostly because the product feels personal. There is an emphasis on "we made this", which makes you want to do more.

      Too Much Friction

Aug 24, 2019 - Software Engineer in Dublin, Dublin
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      * Corey and his team are doing a great job. This can be viewed from financial results and how they try to expand the product portfolio. They improved employee benefits, showing that they care about their people. * There are some good engineers and good people that you can especially have a "real conversation" with and learn from. But only a couple... * Site reliability engineering team is brilliant. They have a good team cohesion.

      Cons

      * There is a frat culture in Dublin office. Bros taking care of each other and deciding people’s faiths behind closed doors. There is too much gossip going on. You have to prove yourself to certain people, not through your work, but... I do not know what are their criteria. If you are not liked – for some reason - then there goes the workplace bullying. * Management in the office seems to be powerless about it. Or maybe indifferent; accepted the situation; even supportive in cases. Promotions suggest this. * HQ is trying to implement its own cultural values, which are excellent, but there is a condescending attitude towards them within Dublin office, as “too American” or “too corporate”; part of the frat outlook. * There is no feeling of purpose or goal, so that people can rally around it. What is the competition? What do customers want? These are not part of the daily conversation. * HR is in Belfast and they have no clue about what is going. I am not sure if they are able to solve issues there. * There is too much politics going on in a small workplace. * Too much technical debt. There is the feeling of flogging a dead horse, constantly.

      Rapid7 Response

      Director, People Strategy

Thanks for sharing your feedback. Rapid7 genuinely hopes to be a company where everyone has the support that they need to be successful, so it is disappointing to hear that was not your experience. I understand it may have been awkward, but I do wish that you had raised this during your time with us so that we could have worked to address it directly; it’s far harder to learn more and make change when we read about experiences this way rather than engage with you directly. Nonetheless, we do still appreciate your commentary. If you would like to discuss your experience with Rapid7 in more detail I'd be more than happy to connect with you personally. If not, I still wish you the very best in your new role. Chris Wallace - Director, People Strategy
