Lots of Opportunities Difficult to Navigate
24 Jan 2023 - Energy Efficiency Engineer in Portland, ORRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Lots of opportunities, lots of projects to work on, lots of funding opportunities to pursue, lots of conference opportunities.
Cons
Everybody is really busy on many different things and frequently pulled in many directions. Therefore difficult to maintain focus and team members. Rules and ways of doing things always changing. There is always a pull to do more and give more of your time and energy to the company and projects.

Incondusive environment for junior scientists
6 Jan 2023 - Anonymous Employee in Richland, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Some good opportunities to do science, decent salary at entry level positions
Cons
Insecure environment created in division I worked in for junior scientists especially if you can't blend in the tribe . Lack of funding is overused as an excuse to deny retention, senior scientists communicate that repeatedly to postdoctoral RAs if they seek long term opportunities. Staff scientists worried about their own career trajectory, which leads to micro-management and heavy disregard for junior scientists work-life balance and boundaries. Even if you forgo that aspect, it's not the organization to expect encouragement for junior scientists unfortunately, to pursue long term career, and it’s becoming a trend. Resistance to retention and diversity. Out of touch and non-communicative senior management/scientists , especially towards young scientists coming from different cultural backgrounds than them (you almost feel like invisible if you don’t identify with the tribe )

Pros
I can not think of any Pros, literally none!
Cons
Bad pay. Benefit is a joke. Conducting meaningless research, and the only goal is to publish useless research papers. Unknowledgeable employees fight to get insufficient funding. It's more important to know someone than your skills. If you argue that this institution can sponsor cap-free visa, remember, that is based on that you can secure funding. If not, you lose the job. So work is not stable at all. STAY AWAY FROM IT. ENJOY LIFE.
