I worked at Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan for more than 8 years

    Pros

No hard skills needed even for most complex projects, as most managers are incompetent in subject matter and most projects die half way through anyway. If anything inappropriate hits the fan, there are contractors to dump the work on. Though, you must have political skills, or you will be eaten alive. Employee performance management is feedback based, so be cool with bosses and no one will care if you actually... did any real work. Golf / sports talk and brown-nosing goes a long way. Once you are in the right "circle" - you are untouchable. One of the best places for jocks to push around nerds, even better than high school. HR does not mind, as long as your boss has your back. Once they made nerds run around the office in some kind of "office Olympics" in order to "improve morale and job satisfaction",... oh, fun memories.

    Cons

Parking is a domesticated animal descending from wolves, though better than any downtown firm. Food around is the same animal of fried variety - all Korean BBQ with rare exceptions. Stay away if you nerd or something, even in IT nerds are treated worse than dirt. You have to dress up to "business casual", even if you are just a low-life punch bag.

    Advice to Management

Keep outsourcing the jobs, Indians are better at simulating the work than Canadians. Do not hire nerds or weird people, they are miserable, have high tolerance to abuse, so it is hard to make them quit.

I have been working at Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good pay, work life balance, friendly dedicated people and less bureaucracy so things get done fast.

    Cons

Few advancement opportunities. People at higher levels rarely leave and stay 10+ years. Lack of diversity in IT. Hard policy against working from home.

    Advice to Management

Please make IT Department more diverse. It will be beneficial and bring new ideas and innovation to technology teams. This is 21st century so allow your knowledge workers to work from home occasionally.
