Pros

Awesome discounts on second hand designer. Awesome coworkers. Decent PTO and holidays off. Options to work from home. Casual environment. Good entry level job in the fashion industry with ethical business model. Interesting services and nice office vibe when it was in the industry city location.

Cons

Like most startups you’re going to get drastic change in a short period of time. However, there is such a thing as too many changes. They randomly told us they were moving very far from their original location for rent reasons. I found like they have 0 loyalty to their employees and don’t really listen to their input. They roll out new services but don’t stay consistent with their advertising, which is so bad for customers. I also found their objectives for lower level employees absolutely unreasonable. When working from home I worked 8 hours straight with no lunch break and an HR program would screenshot my computer every 5 minutes to make sure I was “working”. They would surely double check why I wasn’t working for 10 minutes (I was in the bathroom.) A manager would go through and audit every single thing you would do which would backlog you as well. How can you push a quality service or experience when you’re pressuring employees to reach unreasonable objectives. You may as well implement an algorithm with expectations like this. Their business model is definitely ethical but at a psychological cost to their employees.

Financial Gain Reigns Supreme

Pros

- Fun, young staff - Great employee discount

Cons

This company is run by two extremely inexperienced, unempathetic founders (Rie Yano and Jie Zhang) who put financial gain before their employees. They're ruthless and will do whatever it takes to grow their business even at the expense and well being of their dedicated employees. The utmost priority is financial gain. Company culture? Nope. Investing in talent? Nope. Liveable wage? Nope. Benefits such as 401k, company equity etc? Dream on. The wage gap at this company is embarrassingly dramatic. The average fulfillment center employees wage (Leads included) is around $13 per hour. Meanwhile, members of the cofounder's team are being paid anywhere from $50,000 to upwards of $170,000 for producing laughable, uninspiring work. Want a raise or additional responsibility? You'll be told that you "don't understand the business" or "it's time to move on to a new job". I've repeatedly attempted to believe this company has my best interest in mind but I'm ALWAYS let down. If you're looking for a dynamic work environment with fair compensation, stellar benefits, and transferrable job-related skills, I can assure you that Material World is not that place.

Too many to write down, but in short they are -no career path -repetitive boring tasks -unclean office, unhygienic environment -factory atmosphere -lack of basic office supplies like laptops and computers! -measuring the amount of work done per hour -micro-management -some leads are so annoying you want to cry -pathetic job profile, anything goes -minimum wage job with zero job satisfaction -favoritism is obvious -"fake" promotions -no growth, no incentives
