I have been working at John Sisk & Son full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The company supports a lot the graduate engineers and QSs, the scheme is very well structured and everyone takes the chance to learn a lot about the construction industry and how it operates. The company has a diversified portfolio of projects and the graduates can earn experience both from small projects with small, robust teams and big iconic construction projects with big teams. In addition to that, the company provides the opportunity to be exposed at different roles, from engineering to design management, planning and pre-construction.

    Cons

Work-life balance is a big issue in this industry and this company sometimes, although effort to improve this have been made the last two years. Sometimes people have to work at the weekends in order to keep on track with deadlines. No overtime is paid in general, however the company compensates the people that work away from home with a lodging allowance + expenses from/to site and company trips are covered. Another big issue is that the graduates have to re-locate every 6-9 months but that is normal as you sign a contract with this in mind.

    Advice to Management

The CEO has taken initiatives to improve the work-life balance, such as the early Friday (people leave their jobs at 15:30). Things seem to move at the right direction. If I was running the Excelerate Scheme, I would reduce a little bit the number of people recruited. This way, I would be able to manage them properly by allocating them in projects for more time (annual placements) and trying to diversify more the roles that they undertake at these projects.

I worked at John Sisk & Son full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Recognised as Ireland’s largest and most respected contractor since 1800’s. So a sense of pride came with working for them. Some very knowledgeable staff at high positions.

    Cons

All the managers / directors are there a very long time, so little room for progression. You will only move up so far. Very hierarchical. Despite what they may tell you about open door policy.

    Advice to Management

Don’t forget about your youth. Yes, you may be the operations director or commercial manager now, but those young people coming in aren’t just paper shredders or pencil pushers. They’re the future. The company website and IT resources in general are embarrassing for a company of its size in Ireland. A lot smaller companies have better systems. Quite old fashioned in their ways. Reluctant to change. They’re so big that no one knows what’s going on across the company - massive gap from management level down to intermediate / junior level. Sometimes zero interaction. Too many lines of communication.

I worked at John Sisk & Son full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Very nice coworkers, down to earth management and helpful HR.

    Cons

Everyone is overworked/overstretched at senior level, so sometimes issues go for months without resolution. Thankfully it's never anything serious.

    Advice to Management

Do something to take the pressure off senior management to allow them to focus on the stuff that matters.
