Former Employee - Architect in London, England

I worked at John Lewis & Partners full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Partner led, employee owned, feeling of a family business, supportive and flexible working culture. People are generally very nice to work with: there is a real feeling of camaraderie.

    Cons

Everyone has an opinion! Slow decision making process, the Partnership is not always as commercially astute as it should be.

    Advice to Management

The IT/Technology & Change transformation has been going on for years and years... get on with it and complete it. This has been taking far too long. Don't make the mistake with the business transformation: do this and get it done quickly. The Partnership's future can't wait. Modernise now! And please stop going on and on about John Lewis and Waitrose separately all the time... from now on, things need to be Partnership first! And finally, there have been far too many senior management leadership changes: sort this out. Get the Partnership making a profit again, with proper bonuses for everyone.

I have been working at John Lewis & Partners full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Amazing benefits wide ranging everyday benefits from store discount to private hotels and a learning subsidy. They are also very supportive to flexible working.

    Cons

Parental leave, maternity is 14 weeks full pay, paternity is 1 week full pay

    Advice to Management

The culture and values aspired to are good but the reality doesn’t match up to this and this causes frustrations

Great people to work with, PDR is really good

    Cons

Can be boring when the shop is empty, senior Management seem very hands off. Would be nice to at least meet them

Communication could be improved, took a very long time between interview and being accepted and also took very long when being offered a full time job.

I have been working at John Lewis & Partners full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

As the title says, the work-life balance is phenomenal, working from home is as often as you need. They are also trying to innovate their systems too, which is great to see for a retailer.

    Cons

There are some ...dinosaurs who are clearly just sat in their role for an extremely long time, and they do get a bit hostile when they feel their redundant role is not being taken as seriously by some newcomers like myself as they unnecessarily try to put blockers in place to make it look like their role is worth something. Essentially they have so much outdated business processes that are being kept because of certain veterans of the company would be out of a job if it was streamlined.
