Pros
The company works very hard to avoid layoffs. The current leadership is moving the company towards a technology company rather than an old school industrial manufacturer.
Cons
Some of the old school industrial habits are not let go of easily. The company is very large and comes with the downsides of a large company: entrenched ideas and thinking (this is the way we've always done it), bureaucratic processes, etc.

Retirement benefits are great. Awesome 401(k) match and there's a pension. Strong company that has been around forever and will continue to thrive.

Being such a large company it is hard to get things done quickly.

John Deere Engineering Intern
23 Sept 2016 - Test Engineering Intern in Cedar Falls, IARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
John Deere is a well structure company that has many engineering fields to choose from. They allow employees and interns to experience different roles through there time with them. Intern life was great, they offered housing for all interns (50) at the university near by, which made organizing intern events easy, and meeting people even easier.
Cons
With John Deere being such a large company with so many facilities especially in Waterloo you sometimes get the feeling that you are not making a big impact as an intern. This is most likely because you are placed on smaller projects but nevertheless.

Terrible place to work but great pay and benefits
21 Feb 2015 - Applications Engineer in Waterloo, IARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Pay benefits and job security are the best in the area.
Cons
Takes an unbelievable amount of time and resources to get something simple done. Tons of meetings, a lot of which don't have clear agenda. Lots of politics and ladder climbers.incompetent guys with advanced degrees succeed not guys who are highly capable. This is the 3rd large company I have worked for as an engineer and hands down the worst. It is considered a highly ethical company however my manager has put me in several unethical situations. My experience had been an absolute nightmare. Wish I would have never accepted a position.

Pros
Competitive pay, benefits, time-off, training opportunities, and promotion opportunities. For the most part, the fellow employees are really good salt of the earth people.
Cons
As with any large company, politics sometimes get in the way of good judgement. Depending on your job, travel is a little excessive. Also, to move up in the company, you must be willing to relocate to some non-desirable locations and move every couple of years. Deere is a large company and a little slow to react at times.

Great company for long-lasting career
3 May 2014 - Anonymous Employee in Des Moines, IARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The company treats it's employees very well and the employees are very supportive of each other. The company invests significant resources into the development of its employees. There are limitless opportunities for growth within the company, especially considering that a significant portion of the John Deere workforce are nearing retirement. Everyone I have worked with has significant pride in working for Deere and many within the company are long-time employees.
Cons
This is a very large company and is stiff competition for each position that becomes available. While this can be good, it becomes a who-you-know game. Also, the locations of Deere facilities are not in major metropolitan areas and, as such, not as desirable.
