    I worked at J Sainsbury

    Pros

Fun team, got me through whilst still at school. Wouldn't personalllt pursue this as a career. Good if you just want something part-time.

    Cons

No room for progression. Roles are standardised. What you'd expect in a basic supermarket role. Depends at you want out of it.

    Advice to Management

Give employees more responsibility. GreTer autonomy in a role will boost motivation and thus customer service. Career development into corporate.

I have been working at J Sainsbury part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Second-highest pay in sector (second only to Aldi), decent holiday allowance and discount card. Fairly relaxed and collegiate atmosphere (though this is entirely dependent on your location/managers/colleagues), opportunity for (limited) advancement if you work in convenience rather than supermarket (to CTM/store manager). Lots of opportunity for overtime if you work in convenience, both at your store and others... locally.

    Cons

Somewhat punitive sickness policy, risk that the job will be a nightmare if you work at a location with poor team chemistry/atmosphere or tyrannical managers (I've heard horror stories), not the best place to start a long-term career due to a relatively low upper limit on progression opportunities (being a store manager isn't exactly a dream job for most in terms of either responsibilities/lifestyle or pay).... Additionally, Sainsbury's has a very backward approach to technology - for instance, our EPOS software for tills is abysmally inefficient, slow and prone to long freezes/delays. This can cause a lot of frustration and needlessly impede the ability of staff to do their job.

    Advice to Management

Work to better support colleagues who are on short or long-term sickness leave, especially those with mental health concerns. Prioritise fixing and catching up on technological debt to match competitors, with better EPOS software and the like, so that colleagues can do their job without issue. Continue to ensure that pay rises to be competitive with other comparable employers, and improve progression opportunities... within the company to better reward long-term colleagues who do choose Sainsbury's as a long-term career rather than short-term job.
