I worked at Innovative Interfaces, Inc full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I like leaving balanced reviews of companies I’ve worked for. I really tried hard to think of something good about this company, so that my review would be balanced. And here it is: As with any company, there are several people at Innovative who are truly good people to work with. I loved working with the Sales Engineers, Bids Team, Inside Sales and the Legal team. Also, librarians make for excellent customers. They are intelligent, engaged and a joy to work with. I was aware of the low Glassdoor rating before I accepted an offer here. Because I have personally experienced being a part of a great company that is going through a rough spot, I gave Innovative the benefit of that doubt and accepted the offer. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the worst possible experience, I would say my experience at Innovative was a 10. I acknowledge that it is possible to have better experiences at iii, and there are reviews on Glassdoor which reflect that. Unfortunately, that was simply not the case for ME, and that is why my review is so strongly negative. Please understand that what you will read below is what I and a handful of others I worked closely with experienced. Not everyone feels so negatively about iii. I'll say this: If you are middle management and NOT in the clique, there is a tough road ahead for you. Take the job here only if you're desperate and have to put food on the table, but KEEP YOUR JOB SEARCH OPEN. If you're entry level with a good boss, or are good at elbow rubbing, you could have a nice experience here.

    Cons

I had so many “experiences” at Innovative, I struggled to decide which ones to include here. It was tough: Imagine a company culture that is so adversarial, gossipy and emotionally immature that it feels more like a TV show high school, complete with a clique headed by an executive who ensures anyone she dislikes is soon gone. Imagine leaders are so unbelievably unprofessional that they admit to occasionally missing whole meetings because they regularly take naps during the day, show up to video conference calls with their team in a bathrobe, and repeatedly forget the purpose of meetings they called. Imagine they tell you other team members’ salaries, and regularly mention which one of their direct reports they “wish they could fire”. Imagine a culture where everyone company-wide, ruthlessly talks behind one another’s backs (even trashing their OWN direct reports to other departments – yes, you read that right) and where cross-functional collaboration is not valued at all. Imagine working with product teams so deeply flawed that they don’t take responsibility for anything, consistently miss deadlines, completely “ghost” on projects, operate as if they exist in a vacuum, not partnering with anyone and not caring to partner with anyone. Worst of all, I once sat in a meeting attended by several members of the Executive Management Team. The subject of Innovative’s low Glassdoor rating came up. (I had previously heard buzz about a pending “Glassdoor campaign”, so personally I’m skeptical of reviews left after May 2019. Actually, I’m skeptical of any 5-star review of iii, or reviews that say "no cons". That’s not to say it’s impossible for a person to have a good experience here. It certainly is, especially in entry-level roles. It’s just highly unlikely that in a company so small, you would have NO awareness that there’s a culture problem and have not been touched by it at all.) When the subject came up, the mood in the room immediately got more lighthearted and “jokey”. Officers and VPs began dismissing specific reviews and ridiculing those reviewers as being out of touch, or otherwise missing the mark in their reviews. I was taken aback at how lowbrow and petty a conversation it was for industry leaders to be engaged in. They had a big laugh about the whole thing, including the CEO. After a round-robin discussing which bad review was whose “favorite”, it was clear to me that in their opinion, the low Glassdoor rating is due solely to former employees being unjustly bitter, maladjusted to M&A consequences or highly misinformed, and not due to any Innovative culture shortcomings whatsoever. I mean, this was it; it doesn't get any higher...these were the MOST senior people in the company. They appeared to have absolutely NO PLAN to address the culture at Innovative in order to keep passionate librarians and other expert professionals from leaving the company, and thereby leaving huge knowledge gaps in the process of innovating. They didn’t seem to feel like it was important. They had read EVERY review. And they thought it was funny. I began a job search the next week.

I have been working at Innovative Interfaces, Inc full-time

    Pros

Good people who are passionate about what they do Pleasant work environment Excellent recruiting function - they invest tons of time in the candidate and making sure the fit is a good one New management understands new business models and has also allowed old management to focus on their strengths

    Cons

Somewhat hierarchical which doesn't fit well with a software company trying to be innovative Silos between departments which need to come down if we are going to be enterprise class Boundaries are not always clear Culturally, the business does not appreciate a direct communicator There seems to be a disconnection from the senior management down to the daily operation - possibly because they are very very busy

I worked at Innovative Interfaces, Inc for more than a year

    Pros

Good people that are sincere about trying to do good things for their customers despite the decreasing number of employees.

    Cons

Disjointed leadership team with no clear plan on how to grow into a strong, cohesive company. The process of merging 3 companies into one has been a disaster. The sales compensation plan for 2016 was not finalized until April 2016, with no commissions being paid for two over months. They do not know how to train those who are eager to learn and be successful, and therefore have a hard time keeping good employees.

I worked at Innovative Interfaces, Inc full-time

    Pros

There are some really good people who care about libraries who have worked there. There are fewer of them than there were a few years ago, but still some good ones.

    Cons

Some of the current leadership doesn't seem to really care about the customers, only about profits. Big change from years ago when there was more "serve the library"

I worked at Innovative Interfaces, Inc full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Some good people are still hanging on. May be able to survive once the company is sold and the inevitable reorganization happens...again.

    Cons

Huge loss of institutional knowledge and expertise from the layoffs and staff abandoning ship. So lean they can no longer develop or support the software.

I have been working at Innovative Interfaces, Inc full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are some outrageously talented, dedicated, and sincere people working in this company. As other reviewers have noted, many good people have left due to the corporate situation but the cadre that are still standing continue to reflect a population that cares about libraries and wants to work to develop and support products that make the industry better.

    Cons

The problems here feel insurmountable at times. Morale is a huge problem. Talent drain and the inability to stem the continued loss of key people is another huge factor. Really bad inter-departmental relationships create a culture of constant, "no, not enough resources" and CYA behavior which is not only frustrating but also inhibits any chance of building a collaborative environment to work through issues together. Add in a cup instability and fear, two heaping spoonfuls of stress, and a heavy dash of bitterness and you pretty much get the idea of what it has been like to work here the past few years. Are these problems unique to Innovative? No, but that doesn't mean these are problems employees want to, or are willing to put up with in the long term.
