Sticks out like a sore thumb in West Michigan

-High respect for equity and diversity -Concern for environment
Cons
For the 30 years I worked for Herman Miller, they have always been a shining example of diversity, equity and inclusion. Unfortunately, Herman Miller's (now MillerKnoll) headquarters is in Zeeland, MI which is in Ottawa County. The Ottawa county board was recently taken over by a coalition of Christian Nationalists. They have eliminated the Ottawa county office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and changed the county motto from "Where You Belong" to "Where Freedom Rings". You will find great support for inclusiveness within Herman Miller but not so much in the outside community especially in Ottawa county. Other cons: -An "A" on concepts but "F" on execution: Herman Miller likes to over analyze and it can take forever to change the status quo. -Legacy IT supporting critical functions (it's getting replaced but again, slowly) - Knoll's satellite companies were never fully integrated with Knoll corporate thus hindering the Herman Miller & Knoll integration. -too much "Midwest Nice"; sometimes you just have to spit on your hands, slit some throats and raise the Jolly Roger

Run from this company, especially if you’re in ATL
23 Jan 2023 - Sales AssociateRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Could do a little reading and product learning on your down time & getting paid $18.40 (in Atlanta) was decent. The job overall is pretty easy & straight forward if you’re good at sales.
Cons
The person managing my store does not know how to manage a team, nor do they understand social cues. Really the store felt like a great environment when they (the manager) wasn’t there specifically. He would get upset at you for not knowing certain things or how to do XYZ but he never actually taught you how to do that and doesn’t seem to remember that. This happened many times. He made inappropriate and dis-tasteful jokes. He would act petty & childish if you did one small thing to make him mad. It made it difficult to ask him questions specifically cause you didn’t know what version of him you were gonna get. He would change day to day and it made the work day stressful. He also thought an associate quit because her ‘horoscope didn’t align with another associates’ which was ridiculous, but in reality he never asked any of us how we felt about working there or trying to open a conversation to make us comfortable about opening up to his issues. He was just a toxic person to work with & I would of stayed if someone else was manager. I’d also like to point out that this company still barely has any diversity in most of their stores & corporate.

Good benefits package Great time off benefits Excellent 401k match and company contribution
Cons
Culture is not what is used to be (even 3-4 years ago) Started feeling more cut throat than family focused in recent years Growing/merger synergy pains, but will likely get them worked on in upcoming years Tons of turnover recently

Squandered Potential, Watered Down Values
30 Sep 2022 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The product being sold is inspiring. The history is inspiring. The Design Yard office is gorgeous. The parental leave policy and benefits are decent. There are some geniuses working there, mostly as individual contributors.
Cons
The pay is really bad. Leadership at every level is very white and very male. People don't even realize the ways they are being subtly sexist or racist primarily because most managers are white and don't even notice. Leadership prioritizes quarterly quick wins over longterm success. Leadership prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion KPIs over actual diversity, equity, and inclusion. The mission "Design for the good of humankind" is really just a brand asset, not a lived ideal. The company culture began to be watered down with each acquisition. Accessibility and multi-lingual support are regularly deprioritized. Good design work is often undercut by poor middle management. Designers are told that they are easily replaceable. Horrendous development vendors that fumble projects again and again are regularly re-hired. If you get an internal promotion, you are stuck with a fixed percentage-increase in your pay. Which...can easily exponentiate pay inequities. It's better to leave and then come back. It is really only valuable to your career to work at Herman Miller for a year, get their name on your resume, and then go work somewhere else where you will be paid appropriately and the day-to-day isn't a nightmare.

Cons
Slow as molasses. Risk adverse.

Pros
easy to find a job, sick pay (unless you’re agency), quite lenient with time off especially for mental health, pay above minimum wage, sometimes there’s overtime.
Cons
uses an agency and does not care for those workers at all - treats them as if they’re disposable without recognising they have families to look after and not having job security will not create a happy work environment no matter what. this past week we found out most of my coworkers are getting laid off and there’s been a lot of tension and moral is at an all time low. leaving because i cant deal with seeing friends and coworkers get laid off (again) when most of them practically run the place. supervisors don’t know what they’re doing and often get in the way when we’re trying to work and then tell us to hurry up. not a consistent environment to the point of overworking people to get work done, but the next week there’s no work - understandable from a business stand point you need to get orders out at certain times but it’s very hard to deal with as an actual worker.
