I have been working at Hays full-time for more than a year

    Pros

A place to help with self growth and career progression, coming from a sales background Hays has helped me become a people manager, training is the best I have ever received and this is always the same from other staff feedback, all staff come from so many backgrounds which is great for team bonding and culture.

    Cons

None to add 2 years in.

    I worked at Hays

    Pros

Supportive management, great training, clear progression paths, rewarding job, constantly meeting new people and great work hard play hard culture.

    Cons

Base salary is quite low but if you work hard the commission can more than make up for that, you have to be willing to put in the work though as with everything.

I have been working at Hays full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great atmosphere in the office, fantastic training and opportunities to fast track your career. Hays always hire great people, you cna develop really great working relationships with your colleagues. Work hard play hard-with plenty of opportuites for socialising. You are given the atonumy to run your own business, and your suggestions and ideas are very much welcomed by management.

    Cons

Base salary is very low, and commission structure could be better, but there are plenty of opportunities to win incenitves. The earning potential can vary from desk to desk and is not always down to the individual who works on it!

Appreciate your review and glad to hear all about your pros. In relation to your cons, we do bench mark our salaries so they are competitive in the market and the commissions structure is uncapped. Granted, anyone who's motivated by money would love to see a better comms scheme and a higher base salary so I understand why you've mentioned that. The one sure way to increase your base salary is to gain a promotion. Do you have a promotion contract in place with your manager? If not, it might be worth looking into that and you'll be able to find details on the intranet or, by all means, give me a call on 0203 465 0202 and I'm happy to guide you through the process.

I worked at Hays full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

When I joined Hays, I was part of a team hands-on and competitive, thinking of the growing and achieve the goals as a team, and not as individuals. I would love to work there again!

    Cons

To achieve your quota, maybe you should work more than 8 hours per day.

I have been working at Hays full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Uncapped (more in Cons) commission plus base Working with high performance team Promotions based on fees ($90k in fees for first, $260k second, $325k after) not politics or tenure Once you prove yourself, you get full autonomy but are going to be micromanaged until that point. Upper management makes the rounds to get to know everyone Can add meaningful relationships to your network Pay for your health insurance on the basic level

    Cons

Low base pay (starting at $40k in US) then 2k-5k raises with promotion. Commission structure for new hires is very bad, you have to make them $90k in fees while you get ~8% of that before getting bumped up to better structure. The top commission structure for direct or permanent hires is tiered where $0-$5k is no commission, $5k-$20k is 15% of that $15k (i.e. you get a big $20k fee and your cut before tax would be $2250), $20k-$30k is 20% of that $10k (i.e. you get a huge $30k fee and get $2250 from 5-20 plus $2000 for 20-30 for total cut of $4250 pre-tax), over $30k in fees is paid out at 22% (which happens about once a year as deals typically take 4-6 weeks each and you need two to land in one month for this). Working on a financial year where commission tiers reset every four weeks thus making you close multiple deals per month to make a decent commission check while reinforcing the "What have you done for me lately?" thinking. Temp commission is great which means you have to get lucky enough to be put on a team/desk that has demand for temp workers like IT to catch 25% of deals. Will not be able to move to different specialisms internally unless you are moving to another state or country. Politics runs everything from where you sit to which clients you get. Managers are getting a cut of what the team fees are so the "high pressure sales" environment really takes over meaning screw your client into paying thousands of dollars so we can hit quota this month and we will do it to someone else next month. Not unique to Hays but they sell themselves as so different from "those other recruiters". They are large in other countries but have little brand recognition in US.

    Hays Response

    June 15, 2020Director, Talent Acquisition

Thank you for taking time to share your frustrations. No one could have predicted such a world-wide crisis, one that impacted some of our specialisms more than others. Sadly, we did reduce the size of some of our teams as a result of the pandemic's impact to the business, but our goal was to retain as many of our Hays teammates as possible.
