I worked at Hannover RE (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Solid financials. Very interesting business model.

    Cons

Very “hands on” HR department that appears to be running the company instead of the CEO and managers. I felt there were issues because I was over 50 and gay.

    Advice to Management

    Rethink your HR strategy.

I have been working at Hannover RE full-time

    Pros

    1. Large brand recognition as a reinsurer.
    2. Narrow mandate of reinsurance only. They tend not to engage in insurance since it is not favorably looked up on by their clients.
    3. Good job security.
    4. 20+ vacation days.
    5. Not expected after working hours.

    Cons

    1. "Old school" company with less regards to innovation.
    2. Horrible payers - often 50% below market.
    3. Highly bureaucratic.
    4. Not women friendly - one of the board member made a remark that women are sometimes difficult to give higher responsibility since they are more expected to take care of kids.
    5. Operates in Centralized fashion - German driven. They do not trust "non-German foreigners".
    6. Not a good employer if you are entrepreneurial, they believe in keeping up to the old fashioned ways.

    Advice to Management

    1. Open up to "foreigners". Give larger mandates to subsidiaries and branch.
    2. Improve payscales to match market.
    3. Give better growth opportunities to employees.

I worked at Hannover RE full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A great place to work with good benefits.
Some lovely people to work with
German efficiency at it's finest, at least in my department anyway. They don't do anything by halves!

    Cons

The opportunities to move up in the London office are very minimal. They will try to keep you in the same place doing the same thing for as long as they can get away with.

    Advice to Management

You need to do more to look after the good staff in the London office. Stop ignoring the diligent workers and promoting the lazy yes-men...

    Pros

Less hierarchy than many large corporations. At early stage (1- 2 years) they let you start talking to the external parties on you own and travel to your responsible market. Flexible working hours and practically no overtime work. You need to work 35 hours a week and any extra time will be logged and you can accumulate to take a day-off or work less the other days.

    Cons

They sell themselves as an "International company" but it is a very German company in a good and a bad way. Less creative and becoming more conservative with their approach. Very very frugal. Less structured with they way they train new employees so it is better suited for people with 3-5 year experience. It is located in the middle of nowhere so the only option for lunch is at the company cafeteria (not so great but cheap). No real diversity. Majority Germany employees and many of them don't have much overseas experience.
