Pros
It's better than being unemployed.
Cons
This was the worst company I have ever worked for. The atmosphere felt hostile. There was very little collaboration between colleagues, and management were ruthless. Don't take positive reviews about gilead being at the forefront of science to seriously, they were not from my experience. There was a terrible blame, and fear based culture there. It felt like being in one of those dark work houses of old that you might read about or see on documentaries.
Advice to Management
Perhaps consider your motivation for perusing a career in management. If mentoring and encouraging people don't feature highly in this, then maybe your not suitable. Managers need to be people who are motivated by more than just job titles, ambition and personal success. They should love their field, want to lead people in a positive way, and help cultivate their futures. Even the military has evolved in terms of the way it leads people.

For the most part, a professional work environment, with highly experienced/qualified workers
Cons
work politics, inter-departmental trade offs, management are invisible (or office bound). Too many middle management or "titled" layers.
Advice to Management
Get into the nuts and bolts of your Dept. and be seen to do it. Walk the floor every day you can. Flatten the organization.
