I worked at Forever 21 full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You have the ability to truly learn what it's like to work extremely hard and take that same drive onto another organization and succeed. Most former employees that I know go out and grind so hard, because they never want to go back.

    Cons

The organization is not a well oiled machine from any level. Due to its family-ran structure, Forever 21, often drops the ball on several standards, utilizes old technology and has no official communication structure. Imagine being in a mall full of 5000 people, all different stores and shops – customers and workers alike. Now imagine none of these people know each other, or know a way to successfully connect.... That's Forever 21. But most importantly, the biggest con is the pay. There is no official compensation scale or metric. So if you Manager wants to pay you $20,000 annually and the next person $60,000 annually for the same job, they can and will and there's nothing anyone can say about it. As a matter of fact, there is no notification to alert anyone that they did.

    Advice to Management

Truly take time to decentralize your organization and minimize the strong ethic of the family run structure. Create a compensation structure for your employees that are equally followed across the your organization. For the retail stores, let the compensation be based on 5 areas, Area 1 being the highest paid for major metropolitan cities like Los Angeles, CA or New York, NY. Area 2 for secondary cities like Atlanta..., GA and Houston, TX and etc. Area 5 for areas like Knoxville, TN and etc. Let those compensation scales have a Low Point, Mid Point and High Point. Bring all of your employees in at 90% to Mid Point with fair annual raises based on a qualitative assessment and not at the discretion of a Manager. Look at your staff company-wide. Count how many came from the stores, then look at the your retention. Figure how you can promote more people from within, and keep more people as assets.
