I worked at ExxonMobil full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great peer network within the company. Training opportunities both within XOM and outside training. XOM experience is considered good by other companies. Good opportunities for advancement (if you get very good performance reviews). Many opportunities for travel and purse strings are loose.

    Cons

Advancement at XOM is based on performance ranking, and the ranking system can be influenced by how well your supervisor is respected (e.g. company politics). High rank means good raises, middle rank means very mediocre raises, low rank means ~1% raises or none. An employee's potential for management is decided very early. Those targeted as future managers are quickly advanced through key positions (assumng they don't crash/burn). Downside is those who don't get chosen typically don't advance very far. XOM is focused on grooming the next decades management as much as paying shareholders. Not much else matters.

I have been working at ExxonMobil full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good benefits, and pay is competitive. Company provides pension.

    Cons

In procurement, the company way is to hire mostly straight out of college and then moving folks around to many different roles to create generalists rather than experts. No real control over your career since jobs are not posted for anyone to apply to. Instead a people committee decides your career path. The culture is not great, likely because they don't hire many experienced people, and so they get no differing viewpoints/diversity. Change comes slowly, if at all. Work life balance is terrible.

I have been working at ExxonMobil full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Pay and benefit is good.

    Cons

If you are white/tall/male, and you are a female/white, you can move up to the management easily and quickly. There is no technical appreciation so technical depth is very low. Few hires figure out that exxonmobil only value management layer so most of them try to get up but with very little technical knowledge. 1 person does the work and deliver the results but 9 people pass information and do nothing.
