Pros

The opportunity to live and work in diverse places, interesting work, meaningful mandate

Cons

Toxic organizational culture that encourages networking and self-promotion in order to remain in the system. There is a big gap between culture at regional Bureau and HQ vs. in the field. Recent policies that try to drag UNHCR closer to the modern era of work (flexible work arrangements, mental health support, etc) may be better adopted at Bureau and HQ but was NOT enforced in my operation in the field. There is also a petty culture of competition between UNHCR and other UN agencies that hinder our effectiveness in the sector as a whole.

Pros

Good benefits, you really do help people

Cons

Human Resources takes a highly specialized approach to talent management. In that you cannot really change functions easily in UNHCR. You have to hyper-specialize in one area. So if you are a protection staff, you tend to burn out from trauma without an internal mechanism to alleviate the burnout. The higher you go in UNHCR, the crazier you become.
