      Great Team, But Poor Leadership and Job Instability - Team Member Makeship Employee Review

      Pros

      The best part about working at Makeship is the team itself. The company is filled with many great people who are talented and creative, and they make the work environment very enjoyable.

      Cons

      Despite having many strong team members, Makeship struggles with leadership, company direction, and job security. Management lacks a clear vision, and a noticeable disconnect between upper leadership and daily operations has created uncertainty about the company's future. A major concern is how the company handles dismissals and employee retention. In one troubling instance, six employees, including key early team members, were suddenly let go right before Christmas without warning or cause. Several other similar and unexpected dismissals of well-respected employees have further contributed to instability and eroded trust in leadership. This uncertainty, combined with ongoing disagreements among upper management, has also led many key employees to leave the company voluntarily, further impacting team morale and continuity.

We agree that our people are one of Makeship’s greatest strengths, and we’re proud of the creativity and collaboration they bring every day. I want to acknowledge the impact of the layoffs that happened in late 2023. It was an extremely difficult decision, however necessary for the long-term health of the company. We know that sudden changes, especially those that affect people directly, can be unsettling and frustrating. We’re continuing to work on being more transparent about where we’re headed as a company and how everyone’s day-to-day work connects to the bigger picture. We're committed to staying focused on building a company our team can trust and be proud of.

      Pros

      - Very flexible work environment (good work-life balance, fully remote work, many social outings/meetings) - Collaborative environment - Lots of opportunity for autonomy & responsibility - Opportunity to work with very talented & passionate individuals

      Cons

      - Sometimes due to the nature of time zones & busy schedules, cross-departmental communication can be slightly difficult - Also due to being a start up, employees need to have good organization & time management skills (important skills necessary to succeed in fast-paced work!)

      The work is exciting and you actually want to talk about it after hours Teammates who are caring, motivated, and fun; we genuinely enjoy each other A no-blame culture where we try, learn, and fail forward together Unparalleled benefits, amazing vacation time, and RRSP matching Very cool merch (duh) Excellent tools that help us do our best work Ambitious goals with momentum you can feel People-first leadership that goes above and beyond for staff and clients Annual team retreat somewhere hot and sunny, plus a team offsite for true face time with our remote crew It’s wild how well they take care of us!

      Fast pace, tight timelines, constant ship calendar If you need a slow lane, this won’t be comfortable Bring solutions: automation ideas get a yes, not a maybe
