    I have been working at DFID full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Flexible working patterns are supported. Majority of staff are passionate and committed to the overall DFID mission. There are so many different career paths that you can pursue within the department (e.g corporate roles, advisory, project management, etc).

    Cons

    Sometimes there are stressful periods where you have to work very reactively and do a lot of fire fighting.

    Pros

    Good salary package. Good social acceptance. Opportunity to work diverse environment. This is a best place to learn corporate manner and culture.

    Cons

    Slow salary hike, Corporate politics. If you are a genies type of worker, sometimes you get frustrated seeing the working pattern. Other than that no cons here

    Pros

    Great people in this department, with good expertise. Flexible working options. Travel opportunities. Exposure to international organisations and the internal civil service. DFID pays better than most other Civil Service Departments

    Cons

    Progression is limited for certain jobs unless you actively want to join management e.g. Programme management, Technical advisors. Still working on Diversity.

    I worked at DFID full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Most people are genuinely nice, dedicated to DFID, and good at what they do. There is (or at least was) a real espirit de corps, especially in the country office. Travel, often to some pretty interesting locations, is a big plus.

    Cons

    As you'd expect in the civil service, a lot of things about DFID are a bit antiquated. Management culture, ways of working, IT systems are always likely to be five to ten years behind.

    Advice to Management

    Relative to most of the civil service, DFID is fairly modern and forward looking. But the gap to the private sector is too big to attract and keep talent.

    Changing the world, highly respected aid organisation, great colleagues

    Cons

    Becoming more inward looking and risk averse, and a decline in operational delivery as more funding is pushed through expensive consultancy companies

    Give your staff more authority but make them more responsible for their decisions.
