I worked at Bank of America for less than a year

    Pros

Very progressive engineering culture in the bank with a big emphasis on up-skilling and using new technologies. Fantastic opportunities to take on responsibilities, even as an intern. Exposure to areas outside of software development, e.g., the financial aspects of the bank Very much team orientated, with no official manager or leader for each SCRUM team (could get quite chaotic) Open plan office made it very easy to collaborate Fantastic mentorship

    Cons

The Dublin office lacks many of the corporate perks one would associate with being a software developer for a major bank. Lack of communication between upper management and SCRUM teams led to frustration when certain projects were cancelled. Majority of employees were encouraging and friendly but some dragged down the mood and culture of the office. Not a very competitive salary

    Advice to Management

Come down and talk to your SCRUM teams more often, communicating your needs and WHY you need things to be done a certain way. Consider offering equal benefits to the teams based in London and New York.

I have been working at Bank of America

    Pros

Pay is okay if you are new to the industry, not if you are experienced. Advancement opportunities.

    Cons

The computers are literally 15 years old if not older. The internet is the slowest I've ever seen. It makes it extremely difficult to do your job when your ipad can't connect, or your computer is just too slow. Also, the programs are extremely archaic, aside from CMC. Managers are in a frenzy when upper management comes to visit. You are constantly being micromanaged. Do this, don't do that. Be sure to do this. It's exhausting. Oh and Saturday hours are for the birds. You get Sunday off and a random day off during the week. Where's the work life balance? There's no time to fully rest with 1 day off.

    Advice to Management

Upgrade the computers in the financial centers. Increase the internet beyond dial up AOL. And try not to stress out the managers.

I worked at Bank of America full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Short hours, decent salary,

    Cons

Sales pressure, not an advisor (they cant call it a financial advisor because you dont do very much advising) This job looks good on paper but I’m reality it’s not completely defined. You’re a licensed banker. If you’re in a good location , you can perform well mostly by opening bank savings accounts or MESD money market. If you care about clients and their financial success then this isn’t the job for you. You morality will be tested every day. Micromanaged by someone who only repeats what the higher ups tell him. Compete with bankers for business even though “shadow credit” exists but has many faults so bankers will always be reluctant to refer bank products. Overall, it’s not too hard to do the right thing and Bank of America does not align with that philosophy. The company culture is set up for the bankers and Financial Solutions “Advisors” to harass clients and try to sell them credit cards, other lines of credit and potentially an investment account, of which they can call the call center if they have any questions (the FSA must be focused on selling). Hopefully someone in upper management at Bank of America sees how they do things and speaks up. It’s a very tough place to work and I wouldn’t suggest working for that company more than a year.

    Advice to Management

Either stop saying you care about the clients or actually start doing so. The mobile app and online stuff is very good and will keep many clients even if you say you don’t care about their success, only your own. My quality of life during my brief tenure as a Merrill Edge FSA was not good. I hope that turns around in the future. In my opinion, when employees feel cared about and loyalty from the upper management they go above and beyond what is expected and perform better than those who don’t feel appreciated. Also, spend a full day or a week at a branch and see how hard those people work and how many crazy things come up.Don’t just stop by every branch in a region for 15 minutes at a time to talk to the bank manager.
