I have been working at BDO USA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I'm provided with opportunities to grow as well as to assist in other roles that I am passionate about. We have a strong social planning committee, community service branch, LGBTQIA/Pride alliance, Multi-cultural organization, etc. In addition, I've gotten the chance to assist with recruiting events and office tours. There are lots of ways to be involved and feel connected beyond my primary job responsibilities and these efforts are often encouraged and rewarded.

    Cons

It's still public accounting. Busy season is never easy and part of your performance is being evaluated on your billable hours.

    Advice to Management

Hire people who match the culture since this is what inspires people to stay and work hard here.

I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

BDO SF has some interesting client works for anyone that has passion of doing taxes. This is a great place for anyone who is fresh out of college. You can join the firm without any basic accounting knowledge. If you do not know how to complete a balance sheet, you can still survive at this office. Your senior and above will roll up their sleeves and wrap up the work for you. For first year staff, if you just want to do what you are told without thinking thoroughly, this is the place for you. If you are okay that you only get to do less than five returns for a year, this is the place for you.

    Cons

The scheduling is a mess. Your managers, sr. managers or partners do not communicate to each other when there is a priority issue. They do not give real feedback to staff on real time basis even though they tell you they will at interviews. You will be very surprised to hear a lot of comments after the career round table discussion. People falling behind do not receive proper guidance and feel sad to come to work. The office culture and environment are very bad - talking behind, yelling, and the worse - since it is an open space environment, your senior, manager will look at your screen and see what you are doing (even you are doing client works.) I will leave you to judge whether this is the professional environment where you want to be.

    Advice to Management

    1. be a true "all ears" leader - listen to the reasons why people leave the firm and make changes 2. It is okay to hire people who know nothing about public accounting. However, please have real training courses and real feedback to help them grow and succeed and so they do not feel frustrated after the career round table meeting. It is okay to have big hearts toward these green staff. But at the same time, be fair to your experienced staff who suffers from such big heart decision.

I have been working at BDO USA full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Superb environment to learn and refine your skills. Fabulous opportunities both internally and externally. This firm views the employees' successes as its own personal victories. You are empowered with great flexibility for who you desire to work with here.

    Cons

May work long hours during the busy portions of the year. However, this applies to the audit practices for all large public accounting firms.

    Advice to Management

Please continue to listen to your staff. Do not be afraid to keep jump starting new initiatives that display the firm values its employees.

I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Number of days off, especially during the holidays.

    Cons

They don't actually adhere to their core values. Apparently, they were only meant for clients. Anyone in a position of power could get away with murder as long as the SEC doesn't find out.

I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - New Office with great amenities and location - Employee benefits and compensation are competitive - Happy hours and firm events

    Cons

    - Extremely poor leadership in Minneapolis office, all the way from partners down to managers. - Zero work-life balance - Lots of office politics to contend with even as a first year associate. Staff above you will throw you under the bus at the nearest opportunity to make themselves look competent. - Associates are instructed to eat hours to boost the bottom line. - Open office concept great in theory but does not work well in practice. - Established internal processes for preparing returns are poorly implemented and generally not followed. - Pointless meetings that are ran very inefficiently and take up valuable work time. - Mentoring is almost non existent and usually turns out to be detrimental to your career if you do not offer the right feedback and praise local firm leadership.

    Advice to Management

Remove poor leadership and put in individuals who are dedicated to training and mentoring associates below them. Work-life balance could be greatly improved by hiring additional staff.

I worked at BDO USA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Excellent resources and training, smart people, decent PTO policy, good benefits

    Cons

They hire labor to do work, without regard to fit, thus turnover is high. Blinded by certain metrics makes them unwilling to see other ways people can contribute to the firm's success. Inability to see value in anything but billable hours. Thus, if you're not billable, you're not valuable. Anything else you do that contributes to the development of the firm's people or the strengthening of a client relationship is unappreciated if it doesn't help you reach your chargeable hours goal.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring bodies to do work. See if there's a fit. There's no use hiring someone who tells you he wants to do international tax into an office that has none of that kind of work just because you need a warm body to work on what you do have. It's not fair to the person or to the others who will take over his work when he eventually leaves. Quit trying to fit square pegs into round holes.
