I worked at American University of Sharjah full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Salary and benefits, including housing and insurance

    Cons

everything else....the students are lazy, dishonest, manipulate based on online student evaluation, management does not help despite the fact they know students are cheating, in short it is a cardboard factory. This is the general trend all over middle-east. Their degrees are useless and should not be recognized in any decent western university.

    Advice to Management

why? nothing will change as long as country itself practices slavery

I have been working at American University of Sharjah

    Pros

The students are really great, many of the colleagues are wonderful to work with. Terrific library- paid housing

    Cons

Student enrollment seems to be declining which is scary

    Advice to Management

AUS is one of the best unis in the region, because it has had the best faculty. Did it attract best faculty in the past because pay and benefit package was so good? Stick to what works.

I worked at American University of Sharjah full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Diverse culture; networking opportunities with interesting people from around the world; a unique experience; reasonable resources.

    Cons

No privacy whatsoever - everything is monitored and recorded from phone calls, to internet usage and emails; absolutely nothing to do outside of work; every person is in it for themselves - very little collaboration; very little support from administration and HR; zero confidence in the management of the institution; not a healthy environment in which to live (poor air quality, poor water quality, almost no... healthcare of any kind). I believe many people come here with the best of intentions, but quickly become disillusioned with the professional climate. I really do not know of anyone who left and had positive things to say - other than they were glad to get out.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at American University of Sharjah full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. good housing

    Cons

Extreme prejudice against certain religious/ethnic communities. or races The top management and faculty members belonging to particular ethnic/religious communities hold all the key positions and power. They control students and direct them against those who do not fit in ensuring others get fired. These groups favor friends. Middle-east in general is racist against certain religious/ethnic communities.

    Advice to Management

Diversification of employees is required to avoid politics/power struggle..

I have been working at American University of Sharjah full-time

    Pros

Students class size. English oriented university. Multicultural.

    Cons

Too much politics played by incompetent deans. Appointments are not merit based. Salary depends on the color of your passport. Weak research culture; and less incentives to work harder. An environment that fosters laziness and incompetence.

    Advice to Management

Hire competent managers with an international experience. Hire world class instructors irrelevant of their passport. USE a transparent HR system.
