I worked at American University in Dubai full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Many engaged, intelligent students, respectful and eager to learn and a pleasure to mentor and instruct.

    Cons

Not a serious institution of higher education. It's a Lebanese-owned and -operated, profit-seeking enterprise doing business as a university. As others have mentioned here, these Lebanese, most of them poorly educated, act as an exclusive group of insiders and control the entire university. Academic officials, deans, chairs of departments, etc., have very little influence. Professors are overworked, humiliated, degraded often, even on the way out. The cronyism, incompetence, and rapid turnover will leave you dizzy. The university is in steep decline.

    Advice to Management

Ownership and management remains well aware of all of this and is unconcerned. Their positions and privileges remain in place and they will remain content to watch the university tank, then move on to the next thing. Three interpretations of this prevail among the faculty: 1. The owner set it up this way; it's deliberate. 2. The owner would be horrified to learn this, and would correct it if only the information and reports could get to him. 3. The university began as a small-time operation, staffed by small-minded people. As it grew into a larger, potentially more sophisticated one, it remained under the control of these small-minded people who are flailing and wrecking it, not knowing what else to do.

I worked at American University in Dubai full-time

    Pros

Location in the heart of Dubai

    Cons

1.If you are considering working for the AUD , that only means it is your LAST and ONLY resort. Go ahead if that is your case. 2. Expect the the worst working environment and the least paying in the region. 3. Ridiculous and imaginary expectations from the professors. Professors are blamed for each and every fault in the entire system 4. Spoiled students who are there just for fun. It is the same reason that repels promising students from joining the university. The good ones never want reckless students around, so they avoid the university. 5. I have witnessed numerous cases of terminations for no obvious reasons. 6. Find yourself a better job before it is too late. That's what I did, and believe it or not, EVERYONE on campus is looking for jobs else where. Whoever is still there is just because they failed to secure another job. 7. Insane work load that leaves you no time for your family and social life. You will live in a beautiful city, but will have absolutely no chance to see around. 8. TOXIC environment that is encouraged by whoever are in charge. They encourage students to complaint, and colleagues to spy on one another.

"Stop complaining - none of you would be hired in anything resembling a proper university"

I worked at American University in Dubai full-time for more than a year

    Pros

It hires faculty who would not be allowed to teach in anything resembling a university, then they complain they don't get career progression. None of the academics would be given the title of Assistant Prof in a proper university, and some are even called associate profs, and they still complain. The vice chancellor calls himself a professor, which is laughable as he really is clueless. Academics who work in Dubai are like the other executives, those who can't make it in major business/academic centers. That is why they are treated as a third-tier academics, which is fair enough. If you can teach in a proper university in the West or Asia, you don't move to Dubai, so stop complaining. You are teachers, not academics, so do expect to teach most of the time. The entire UAE has yet to publish in a proper journal, including NYUAD, so don't consider yourself as academics, and expect to be treated as one. AUD pays much more than most, if not all, deserve, and its tax free. It is true, it pays less than some of the others, but with the housing included its not too bad. One thing I agree with, is that it should not be called AUD, but Lebanese University of Dubai, but that's neither here nor there. Its a university created to help those students who can't get into proper universities in the West to get a degree, which in my mind is admirable.

    Cons

The salary is lower than some peers, but then again why kill yourself. Your students are all here to have a good time. You should do the same. No one applied to AUD to study, so give them what they pay for, and just learn to relax.

    Advice to Management

Increase salaries, and don't force faculty to use your housing.

I worked at American University in Dubai full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

A good beautiful campus that you will be never able to see as you will not get time from the job.

    Cons

I read the reviews here and I thought it would not be the same but believe me it was the worst. The management of AUD is worst and incompetent in hiring good people. They do not care about your qualifications or your experience or research work as they will not give you time to do it.ُ The management people are arrogant and they treat you like in lowest possible way. If you are from a nationality, they don't like then they will treat you like garbage. You will get a offer letter but it has so many loop holes that you can't imagine. They will try to keep thing hidden from you to change and use them later on. The salary is the lowest for assistant professor position just about 44000 usd a year for teaching 8 courses a year with average class of 30 students. If you want to earn more then you will have to leave your holidays in summer and then they will give you more amount. The search committee is the useless ever as they just need the person who agrees on their terms and conditions with lowest salary. They have written to complete 8 hours a day but when you will get time table your one class will be at 8.30am and other in the evening at 7pm. Means you will stay more than 13 to 14 hours on campus. Your family life is dead. You will not be able to do research and if you will not do it they will not increase your pay annually. You will be dragged into every useless meeting at the campus as management don't want to do anything. They just portray aud is best but it is the worst in UAE in terms of salary, work load and life. I strongly discourage to join aud. you will think that it will not happen to you but it will happen to you surely.
