I have been working at AbbVie full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good people very willing to help each other. Benefits Ok. Monthly Friday treat. Big emphasis on Health and Safety. Subsidised canteen with great chef.

    Cons

Very lean site under resourced in many areas. Run like a generic Pharma company where every thing is about lower cost. Work life balance is not good. High staff turnover.

I have been working at AbbVie full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits, opportunities due to large cross-functional and global company

    Cons

Many politics, goals and AbbVie behaviors are not taken seriously at leadership level, resulting in many employees “gaming” the system. Over time, too many field sales people coming into the home office to sell their way into leadership through relationship-building vs. tangible results, and cross-functional relationships and processes are now broken, resulting in many opportunities to revamp business processes and organizational structure.

I have been working at AbbVie full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The compensation package is excellent and I am surrounded by very smart people. I take pride in working for a company that strives to solve some of the biggest health challenges people face and believe in AbbVie's intentions to put patients first.

    Cons

I and many of my peers have become very cynical in the last 8 months about the culture of this company. HR has become way too powerful, and the intention to create our culture has backfired to the point it is corrosive. I am definitely not alone in feeling this way - there is a lot of cynicism. We all know that companies have no loyalty to employees, that is just business, yet in the old Abbott culture there was at least more respect. I feel that AbbVie is headed towards the "GE" culture of the bottom 10% are out. If that is the intention, HR should stop being so hypocritical and just state as such instead of expecting everyone to drink the Kool Aid that AbbVie cares about its employees' development. The truth is that AbbVie only cares about approximately 5% of its employees' development. Strong employees are made to feel useless simply because their managers have chosen to champion/support someone else, and we are all only as valuable as our last performance rating. The performance calibration process is disgusting to the point of almost being childish.

    Advice to Management

Do not let HR run rampant and use some common sense. Recognize that our performance review system is severely flawed in that it is very inconsistent throughout the company with some functions (i.e. Finance) having a much more stringent "bar" than others. Recognize that there is a certain degree to which it is arbitrary who ends up on the "key talent" list. You cannot run the company with only a small percentage of the employee population, yet those who do not have a guardian angel advocating for them are basically told every day they are worthless.

I worked at AbbVie full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great learning experience, very smart people.

    Great pay and benefits.

Lots of opportunities for personal growth within the company.

    Cons

Politics between different groups could sometimes result in an unpleasant work environment.

Work-life balance was supported in theory but not in practice.

    Advice to Management

Demonstrate a good work-life balance if you want to promote it among your employees. I think this would foster a more creative and engaging work environment.

Plenty of opporunity and fully resourced projects.

    Advice to Management

Be open to both sides of feedback - good & truthful that may sometimes sting but well meaning.
