I worked at AIDS Healthcare Foundation full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Work environment in store was very fun and I met lots of friends for life working here. You meet a WIDE variety of customers, many of whom are awesome. Good perks in terms of discounts. My GM and coworkers were great. I truly did love this job, but being continuously overworked, underpaid, and disrespected was too much to bear after almost two years of working my a** off for this company.

    Cons

"Values Employees" is supposedly a core value of the company, but they obviously don't care about any of the OTC employees (especially trans, disabled, and POC employees). Also the Cost of Living raises are a joke and everyone is chronically underpaid. Thrift store employees are asked for so much physical and emotional labor for pennies, and yet the company still wonders why they can't keep a full staff. Additionally corporate was bad at communicating regarding events and promotions, and only responded to constructive criticism with pettiness and ableism. Overall AHF has lots of potential, but where they fail is in actually caring for their employees more than their paychecks.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees, prioritize harm reduction (in addition to HIV/AIDS care), standardize practices between stores, PAY EMPLOYEES A LIVABLE WAGE

I have been working at AIDS Healthcare Foundation full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Company does care about saving and changing the lives of those living with HIV. Laid-back work environment.

    Cons

Poor planning from senior management. Employees seem to be hired/promoted based upon sexual orientation or HIV status not credentials and true qualifications. Mainly, 20% of the people does 80% of the work while most stand around and talk. Some employees manage to slide in under the radar with little accountability. One or two people work allday while others stand by offering no help or little solutions. Lastly, I work in an office where providers are judgemental and lack compassion. I do not think Mr Weinstein is aware of the ethics (lack there of) in some centers.

    Advice to Management

Hire/promote based on education, experience and proven track records. Create role specific training plans for all positions and invest in good people. Cut mediocre, negative, judgemental providers who care nothing about your patients. Listen to the client surveys and take a closer look at the senior leaders of those centers with consistent low scores. Recognize hard working employees more often.

I have been working at AIDS Healthcare Foundation

    Pros

Attracts people who are compassionate and bright. Can really make a difference in peoples lives and serve people who are often overlooked in care. VERY diverse work environment, welcomes people of all races, sexual orientation etc. Provides good vacation benefits.

    Cons

Does not seem to appreciate employees especially if they question management. CEO is very disrespectful to employees, will berate them in front of their peers, or to their face. Have heard him call staff " lazy , ungrateful, stupid." and not privately in front of their peers. Does not play well with other non profits, or AIDS services organizations which can make it difficult to coordinate or use all the resources available to patients. . Has attitude of providers being disposable, cannot accomplish much if we do not have providers or staff. Thousands of patients currently without healthcare providers in LA. Is keeping patients and staff in the dark about staffing claims that it is due to providers wanting more money and can't compete because they are a nonprofit but somehow has money to put billboards in city to fund shame based marketing, force condoms in porn, lobbying and fight high rises in Hollywood. Marketing about sexual health is very shame based, we should focus on engaging patients in care not placing judgment on their sexual health practices.
