The "direct" part of its name comes from the way its agents sell directly to customers by telephone and through online quotes. Matrix Direct also partners with other firms to provide quotes for other lines including automobile, health, travel insurance, and the ultimate travel insurance: end-of-life arrangements. AIG acquired Matrix Direct in 2007.
