Registered Nurse (Emergency Department) was asked...13 August 2015

Tell me about a time during your previous nursing experience where you had to advocate for a patient to a superior?

1 Answers

My previous experience was working on am acute medical-surgical unit in a hospital. While we saw many sick patients, we were not an intensive care unit. I once had a patient who I felt was not appropriate for the level of care on our floor. His blood pressure had been low since the shift before and IV fluid boluses were only helping minimally. I stayed with this patient and attempted to contact the doctor who was not answering. I contacted the charge nurse and our rapid response team to come evaluate the patient. I finally got a hold of the doctor who put in orders for more IV fluids. I continued to stay with the patient and take his BP which was not improving. The doctor came to the floor and I finally said that I thought this patient should be transferred to the ICU for closer BP monitoring because our patient ratio was too high for me to be able to provide proper care. He agreed and the patient was finally transferred to the ICU. Less
