      Senior Recruiter Interview

      1 Dec 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Denver, CO
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Xero (Denver, CO) in Nov 2017

      Interview

I was approached by a leader asking if I would entertain a recruiting opportunity with Xero. After I said I would be interested, I was sent an email asking me to describe my ideal position. I provided a few paragraphs and bullet points. The response was that what I provided lined up to the position. Next, I was invited to participate in a video "interview" in which I was drilled with written cookie cutter questions. I had like 30 seconds to prepare an answer before I was recorded and then given like 2 minutes to answer. I only got one chance to answer and there was no way to edit my response or have more than one answer. I completed something like 8 questions and my video "interview" was submitted. 5 days later after hearing nothing, I circled back to the leader who originally approached me about the opportunity and asked about next steps. She responded saying they went with someone else with no reason for the decision. I responded asking for feedback on why I wasn't selected and then got ghosted by said leader. A couple of days later I got a second rejection in the form of a canned ATS email. I didn't get a face to face interview. I didn't even have an actual conversation with a real person. I was approached and jumped through some hoops without even having the chance to talk to anyone and then dumped to the side. I now use this company and recruiting process to describe what a terrible candidate experience looks like. If this is how they treat potential new employees that they are trying to sway to come work for them, I can't even imagine how they treat their current employees. Xero stars. Would not entertain again.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

I honestly don't remember all of the questions because it was a really strange and awkward video "interview" but they were pretty boring and stale. One of them was something like "Describe a time you received feedback that you didn't like" and "Tell us why you are the perfect fit for this role." I half expected the last question to be something like "Recite the alphabet backwards while standing on one foot." Barf.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We hear your disappointment about not making it through to the next phase of our process. Video interviewing is a technology we are testing and, as such, we are learning a ton about what works and doesn’t. Your feedback helps us continue to improve our process. We wish we could meet with every candidate personally and provide feedback to those who don’t receive a call back. If you’d like to reach out to us directly, we’d be happy to share our rationale for not moving forward with your candidacy. In the meantime, we wish you all the best. -Julie

      Senior Recruiter Interview

      22 Jan 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Denver, CO
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Xero (Denver, CO) in Dec 2017

      Interview

There was an initial recorded video interview with a handful of timed questions. There were mostly behavioral interview questions, "tell me about a time when you...". You have 30 seconds or so to prepare before it starts recording. A few days later someone reached out to schedule me for a 30 minute video interview with the recruiting manager. It was pretty informal, she asked great questions and gave a lot of info about Xero and the recruiting team. Had a really positive experience with her. I was then scheduled for two additional video interviews, one with an HR rep and another with the HR manager. The HR rep asked a lot of yes or no questions that didn't seem very applicable, and she seemed to make a lot of assumptions about my experience without letting me explain it myself which was weird. She went 15 minutes over so I didn't have much time to speak with the HR manager afterwards, so that conversation was short and informal, mostly just an introduction. They were friendly but I didn't really get any new information about the position and it didn't feel like a very effective interview. I then had an onsite panel interview with 2 HR executives. They asked great questions about my recruiting experience, the steps I take to source candidates, how I work with difficult hiring managers, and questions related to my recruiting style and approach. It was a really positive experience and they seem like a solid team with good leadership. This was followed-up with an additional video interview with the recruiting manager which was also positive. Standard questions about salary, start dates, etc. I left the interview excited about the company and with a positive impression of the team. Unfortunately I wasn't selected for the position. The interview process seemed a little lengthy and I think they could cut down on several steps, but overall it was a positive candidate experience for me.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I agree that we can make the interview process more concise. As we continue to evaluate our interview process and work to give candidates a positive experience with Xero, feedback really helps in knowing what adds value to the interview experience versus what does not. Glad to hear your experience was overall a positive one! -Julie (People Experience Director)
