      Buyer Interview

      25 Aug 2013
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Brooklyn, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Uncommon Goods (Brooklyn, NY) in Jul 2013

      Interview

I had 2 phone calls. The first one was pleasant from HR, asking all different types of questions about my experience, instances i've experienced, how i'd handle situations, etc. The second call, with someone in the department, was... uncomfortable. She was a bit... rude? She basically told me on the interview she didn't think I was good enough for the position, and that I don't even understand what it is she does. She said all of this without really giving me a chance to speak or explain myself. Why bother even setting up a second interview if you're just going to assume I'm not good enough?

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Where would I make purchases/how would I go about buying products, and "I'm not convinced you're right for this position..."

      Interview

The interview process was long and extremely time intensive. I appreciate them taking the time to find a good culture fit, but also it would be nice for them to do a better job of respecting the candidate’s time. I made it to the final round and they decided to move forward with another candidate. Totally fine and I respect their decision. However, considering all of the time that went into 6 interviews plus a presentation I would have really appreciated more direct feedback on why I was not selected. This feedback could really help me improve as I continue my job search. They also asked some strangely invasive questions in regards to where all I was applying and how far I was in the interview process that were awkward to answer.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your interview experience with Uncommon Goods. We appreciate that you and our candidates take time out of their schedules to speak with our team as we seek the right candidate for the job. In recognition of candidates' time and contributions, we compensate candidates for interview processes where they are asked to prepare and present a project relevant to the needs of the position; we sincerely hope that you found the project to be an engaging creative exercise. We also hear and value your feedback regarding questions about other interview processes our candidate may enter during their conversations with us. We sincerely apologize for any discomfort caused. We will integrate this feedback into our structured interview process to ensure all candidates are asked consistent questions that directly contribute to our understanding of their aptitude for the role. Our hope is that the furthering of a structured interview process will also lend itself to shorter interviews and more efficient hiring decisions from our teams. Best of luck in your job search and thank you again for the time you committed to the interview process. Talent Acquisition Partner Uncommon Goods

      Anonymous interview candidate

      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Uncommon Goods in May 2022

      Interview

Very short call. Only had 1 call with the talent recruiter. It was extremely difficult to hear her due to excessive background noise and her muffled line continuously cutting out. The whole interview felt splotchy and unprepared. I've been in the industry for over 10 years - and was trying to explain to a recent college grad who has worked for the company for 6 months - my background and history on a splotchy call. Poor use of everyone's time to find the right candidate.

Thank you for your feedback. We apologize your experience was less than stellar. We strive to begin creating the best potential team member experience from this initial point of contact. We do thorough interview prep meetings for each job launch to make sure everyone is prepared for their role in the interview process. We are disheartened that was not apparent on your call. Going forward, we will make sure that the initial phone screens are substantial and communicate our sincere interest in your experience and background. In this remote world of work, technology isn't always on our side and so we have checked all connections and equipment to ensure that calls are clear and asked that should any future disruptions occur during a phone screen, that the call is rescheduled to ensure the quality of the experience. Again, our apologies and we thank you for your time in submitting this feedback so that we may be better. Senior People Manager

      Buyer Interview

      Anonymous interview candidate

      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Uncommon Goods in May 2020

      Interview

Extremely unorganized process. Much of the reviews on this company allude to it being in disarray and that couldn’t have been more clear during this process. I was emailed and offered and interview and asked to respond with my availability. Two days later I hadn’t heard back, I followed up and an interview was put on for me the next day. When I did the phone interview it felt to me that the position had already been filled and the Manager was only speaking to me because I had followed up on the interview email. I was then sent a very generic denial email in which it stated “we have filled this position and may not have had an opportunity to look at your submission.” This wasn’t the case since my project had been reviewed and I interviewed with the Manager..... Really unprofessional and sad to have the inability to even send a proper denial email. In full transparency I was holding my breath that I wouldn’t get the offer because I was so anxious about joining a team that appeared so outwardly chaotic.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We apologize that you had a negative experience interviewing for our open position. We agree that you should have been notified personally and we mistakenly informed you that we filled this position in a fashion that was impersonal and not up to our standards. In managing the large amount of applicants, and adjusting to hiring remotely we don’t like that we made this mistake and again apologize. Thank you for your feedback and we are certainly using it to improve how we organize our communications around our open positions.
