I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at US Department of Veterans Affairs in Jun 2023

Interview

Only consists of 1 interview with the Chief Engineer and a Technician. Asked a series of around 7 questions I was able to answer. Both were very nice, but this role is more of an equipment management position rather than engineering in my opinion which wasn't what I was looking for.

Interview Questions
  • What is life cycle management and why is it important?

I applied online. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at US Department of Veterans Affairs (Fresno, CA) in Apr 2021

Interview

I got a call to setup a phone interview. When I attended the interview, It felt like the interviewer was just reading questions off a script, not really interested in my answers. I got an offer but the overall tone put a sour taste in my mouth.

Interview Questions
  • They asked about my previous biomedical projects in college and what results I got from them

Bummed out I spoke too much about my passion for film/tv spots in my JR CW position interview. I don’t think the CD thinks I’m a good fit for the role now bc the agency works primarily on social.

As a nonveteran, it's not going to happen unless you come in on a special program or hiring authority, such as Pathways. Ideally you could find a position that ladders to a 13. Most likely, best case you'd start at an 11 (9 is more likely), 12 if you're extremely lucky.

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at US Department of Veterans Affairs (New Orleans, LA) in Sept 2013

Interview

The interview was very straight forward with typical questions expected of a government job. Examples-- What have you had to overcome in the past? When have you had to display leadership in an unexpected situation? What experiences have you to be the person you are today? Are you prepared to move where you're needed?

Interview Questions
  • Provide an example of an adverse event or experience and explain how you overcame this obstacle?

I applied online. I interviewed at US Department of Veterans Affairs

Interview

Applied through USAjobs. Heard back a little over a month later to set up a phone interview with 4 HR and BME employees. Interview was somewhat difficult since most questions were multipart and no feedback was given. Interview questions were mostly from the sample questions section of the VA website and were related to whatever the duties of the engineer were going to be. It's been a month since my interview so I assume that they chose someone else, but you never know with government agencies.

Interview Questions
  • Please describe a time that you had a disagreement with a co-worker. How did you handle it? What was the outcome? What would you have done differently.

Has anyone worked for US Veterans Affairs? What's it like, are the benefits decent?

From what I’ve heard it’s very different from place to place. But in general the VA has a reputation for being extremely underfunded, inefficient, ineffective, slow, backwards, primitive, bureaucratic, etc. so I doubt many Fishbowl types would have positive things to say. That said it’s a government job so benefits and work life balance are probably pretty good
