      Product Owner Interview

      14 Mar 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Scholastic (New York, NY) in Mar 2018

      Interview

I applied online in January, then saw a very similar-looking position with a slightly different title on LinkedIn. I messaged the person who posted it to ask whether it was the same job. She said that she had been tweaking the title and job description, so I should just send her my resume, which I did. Phone screening was rescheduled about 6 times. It took about 20 minutes; interviewer did most of the talking. The onsite interview was rescheduled four times and turned out to be a disaster. I was scheduled to see six people, one by one. The first person asked me to explain how my experience qualified me for the job and seemed confused by my reply. We then established that she believed the job I was applying for had actually already been filled. The second person called my cell phone, unbeknownst to me, as of course I had the ringer off as I was in an interview situation. The third person interviewed me by Google Hangout. There were technical difficulties with the conference room equipment, and eventually I had to download Google Hangouts on my phone to have the conversation. None of them could tell me who or even how many people would be in the team. They said that this position had to be filled before that determination could be made. They also said that there was "realignment" going on in multiple levels of the organization. Then I waited in the conference room for about 40 minutes alone. Left a message with the HR person. Eventually an assistant came in and told me that the other three people scheduled to talk to me (including the hiring manager) had been called into a meeting and I should just leave. I went home and called the HR contact, who told me that she would follow up with the recruiter, and I should wait to hear from him. But I had never had any contact with any recruiter regarding this position! I emailed the hiring manager to say that there had obviously been some confusion -- and no one has contacted me at all since then. It all seemed very disorganized and unprofessional. If the position is filled, or I am not qualified for the position, why bring me in? And if you bring me in by mistake, why not apologize? And why not ensure that all interviewers see my resume before the interview and are on the same page about what positions are open?

      Interview

Emailed me 30 minutes before our scheduled interview saying they had to cancel with no explanation offered, despite a follow up email. Very unprofessional, I recommend they revisit this practice in the future.
