Product Analyst - Social Studies Interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at IXL Learning

      Interview

I was introduced to IXL at a career fair. I had a good talk with the representative there, and waited about 3 weeks until I was contacted for a phone interview. When I did have my phone interview, the woman was nice, and I thought I provided good answers to her questions. Until the brainteaser came up, and although it was easy, I couldn't quite get it on the spot. I got an email a few days later telling me that my skills were not what they are looking for.

      Question 1

Asked about how you have handled challenging situations in the past. A brainteaser about three jars of jellybeans.

      I interviewed at IXL Learning

      Interview

Sent in my resume and cover letter one night, and got an email from IXL the next day to set up an interview. Very prompt, friendly, and professional, and set up an interview for three days after that. Was looking forward to the phone interview and practiced a lot beforehand. Unfortunately, the phone interview didn't go very well. We didn't really click off the bat, and the interviewer spent a long time explaining the company and the position. The interviewer didn't really ask me any typical questions I was expecting--most notably, she never asked why I wanted to work for IXL, or anything really about why I was interested in them. She asked a few questions about two things from my resume, and what sorts of social studies I was interested in, but that was it. I didn't feel like I got a good chance to expand on who I was as a person, why I was passionate about IXL, and how I would be a good fit for them from the questions I was asked, and I didn't feel comfortable expanding and going too off-topic from the questions I was asked in order to incorporate this. Then I got the brainteaser, which I didn't figure out without some hints. I don't mind the brainteaser aspect, I think it's a playful component but it wasn't really done playfully or lightheartedly. The interview lasted about 30 minutes as expected, and she told me she'd be in contact within a week. I sent in a thank you email the next day, and didn't hear back for almost two weeks. I knew after hanging up the phone that the interview didn't go that well, which was partially my fault but also compared to other phone interviews I've had, this one wasn't facilitated that well. So it made sense that I was told there wouldn't be any next steps.
