      Product Help Content Writer Interview

      30 Apr 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at GitHub in Nov 2017

      Interview

After applying online, I was contacted by a recruiter and sent a take home writing test. The test was simple, but not very technical so some may get thrown off by the subject matter. I believe it's designed to test empathy moreso than technical aptitude. You need to be able to form a decent sentence, of course. After passing the test, I has a series of video interviews, first with my would-be manager, then with people that would be cross functional partners. There was one task-based meeting that was one-on-one, and another discussion related to job function with a group of other writers. The other meetings were about things like empathy, working remotely, and diversity. For the most part, everyone was very pleasant. The vibe was super casual and I felt comfortable talking with everyone. I proceeded through the rounds and got to the final feeling pretty good about how it was all going. They made it clear early on that they no longer did onsite interviews for this remote role. After my final interview the recruiter has a talk with me about the various orientation dates coming up in the next few months. She even sent me a benefits and perks summary. I thought I had it in the bag... but then the bullet. A day after the benefits email I received a bullet, saying they wouldn't be moving forward. The worst part was that they have a strict no feedback policy, so I couldn't get a sense of where the shortcomings were. That was the only negative part of the experience - besides not getting an offer :-)

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at GitHub (San Francisco, CA) in Feb 2016

      Interview

The process was very fast and well-coordinated. 1. I submitted an application. 2.I completed a 3-part writing test. 3. They asked for a video phone interview with the hiring manager and another writer. 4. They invited me to SF for face-to-face interviews. I met with 9 people in 5 hours. 5. A second video phone interview with the hiring manager was scheduled due to technical difficulties with a video phone interview held during my f2f visit. 6. Received email notification that I was not selected for the job.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

All of the interview questions were interesting, challenging, and fun to answer. Almost all of the interviewers asked why I was in technical writing and about my passion for writing and supporting software users.
