an initial interview with HR for basic questions and past experiences and then an interview with both future editor and managing editor to discuss the possible niches, followed up by offer decision with little to no room for salary negotiation

Conversational and thorough. Gave me a real understanding of the context that led to the opening of the job and their expectations for what it could become. Were open to suggestions.

Two interviews with editors, asking about my experience, why I was interested in the particular beat, and stories I'd pursue if I were on staff. Very standard and amiable. There was minimal interaction with HR initially, which I actually appreciated.
