      Account Manager Interview

      6 Aug 2013
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Saint Petersburg, Sankt-Peterburg
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Booking.com (Saint Petersburg, Sankt-Peterburg) in Jul 2013

      Interview

After initial phone screening I was invited for a face-to-face interview. First Interview on July, 9th was really intense and long, I was interviewed by 2 ladies from Moscow who were relocated to their new office in St. P. Overall, they were asking challenging and interesting questions, but I did not like the attitude of the main manager who constantly emphasized that booking.com has no competitors on this planet and particularly in Russia. She also did not know that individual users of booking.com can save their credit card details in the system and insisted that it was not possible. In the end they left no contact details of their office and informed me that a recruiter from their German office will get back to me by July, 16-17th, which never happened. As they have NO contact details and phone numbers of their offices in Russia on their website and as the German lady was on vacation with no access to her emails, I could not check the status of my application. On July, 24th I left for Belgium, where I had some freelance work to do. On July, 25th I received a phone call from their Czech manager who came to St. Petersburg and wanted to see me ON THE SAME DAY for the second interview. I said that I really wanted to get this position and that I would love to see him personally but as I was in Brussels there was no way for me to come to their office on the same day. I offered Skype conference with him. He said that it was not necessary and that I should not worry because the recruiters will reschedule my meeting for the next week. I asked him to send me his contact details so that I could get in touch with him if I do not get any timely information from recruiters and he promised to send it at the soonest. However I have not received any emails from him that week. Next week I received an autoreply from another recruiter from Austria saying that I was rejected for this position. Luckily I had the phone number that this Czech manager called me from on my mobile and it turned out to be the number of their St. Petersburg office. When I called it I had a talk with their manager who I had the first interview with, where she explained that «this is life» and «such things happen», however I could not get any feasible explanations from her as to why they never contacted me BEFORE that same-day-second-interview request and why they promised me to reschedule a meeting for the next week if in fact they picked up someone who had been lucky enough to be available for an interview on that day. When I told her that booking.com pickes up people on the first-come-first served basis she denied it and said that in fact they already knew who they were going to choose after the first stage of interviews. She also added that both their vacancies (account manager and junior account manager) were closed now, as they found some nice girls on them. On the next day I received an email from the Czech manager where he wrote that «During the hiring days in St. Petersburg, the hiring manager made a decision not to invite you for a second round of interviews. At the moment of our telephone conversation about possibility to speak to our recruiters later on, this decision was not made yet” when he CLEARLY invited me to their office on that day during that phone conversation. I understand that they do not want to tell you the truth – which is – you were not there and we decided not to wait for you and we don't care if no one informed you in advance about this interview – but what they were saying totally contradicts to what happened in real life and I find it very disrespectful and unprofessional. Lastly, I found that they have put up the same vacancies on their website today - in a couple of days after the Russian lady had reassured me that they had already closed these vacancies and they found the right candidates for them. @make your conclusions@

      Interview

The selection process started with an assessment which is supposed to give a chance to show your practical skills in this particular role. The idea is great but the assessment itself was confusing, there was not enough time to answer all the questions properly and many questions were not even that relevant to the role. If you manage to pass, you move to the interview stage which is the interview with a recruiter. I had a pretty relaxed interview with a lovely recruiter who said I left a positive impression and she will present my candidature to the next stage (which is an interview with the manager). However, at the end of the same day I received a message that they will not be moving forward with my application with no further feedback. A couple of weeks later I saw the role being reposted again.

Mostly just asking about my career path and how my past experiences could be relevant to this role.
