What is health insurance like at J D Wetherspoon?

Pros

Discount scheme Lots of perks for hourly paid Ok-ish salary but not worth what you are put through and doesn’t match the expectation they have of managers

Cons

Senior management don’t have a clue, over the years perks for staff have increased, nothing for management & the management package is now the same as the associates with no responsibility You will never have enough labour to run your pub but HO will try and cut hours back even more and tell you your not doing enough. You are salaried for 40hours but have at least 20hours of paperwork to do a week and have to put yourself on bar rota for a 50hours. You get free food but don’t get a break so pointless. Eve. If it’s quiet you’ll only be allowed to rota 1 other person with you so can’t even get a break then. Even though you wouldn’t take a break anyway you would spend it doing paperwork. If your staff have any health concerns you better look after them and do everything you can. But if you are ill or have any issues, don’t waste your breath, you just need to man up because it’s a massive inconvenience to your area manager who has important spreadsheets to work on that will tell you how much more you should have done for them last period and how you didn’t perform anywhere near as good as there unrealistic targets says you should.

Advice to Management

look after the managers that have been sweating blood and tears for years for you, reward them, stop asking why they aren’t giving you anymore when you have stripped them from any differing perks to the staff who have less responsibility and can just leave the job when the clock says without taking stress and workload home (or likely not home because you’ll still be working), you don’t pay overtime but expect it to be done and you turn a blind eye, you expect the best results for everything which you say is aspirational, but heaven help you if if don’t deliver 5 greens or record sales or best ever profits or you go over by 2 hours because your team of 60 had to do an hours e-learning by the end of the week that you set and you said we had to pay them for, EVEN if your challenges were mountainous and you put every hour you had sacrificing family and health into delivering something that most couldn’t I..e Company made you have crap refurb so it was shut for months or a competitor opened up next door who undercut you or you had to spend tons on unavoidable repairs or HO refurbed the spoons up the road and not you...you would not believe the amount of stress you put on us when we are already exhausted. It is never good enough. Then you put more stuff in to give you top marks so you get top employer (which is rubbish btw) that costs pub profit so more pressure on pm but pm doesn’t even get it eg extra £1hr for staff after midnight but managers don’t get even a penny. Give them less but expect more. Chop the hours and expect more output. And sit in front of your important 2 pager demanding to know why with less labour that your mystery shopper scores have declined and it is unacceptable that the toilets have been highlighted as missed twice in the last quarter. No one in senior management has worked in a pub how they are run now so stop telling us you know how to do it. You wouldn’t have a clue. When you ran the pubs there were only 2 draught lagers on tap, 1 gin on back bar, no SOP’s, no BOH’s, no mystery shoppers, you didn’t open until lunchtime on sundays and you definitely didn’t work until 3am, no area roles, HO personnel actually dealt with your pub personnel, there were no people audits, your pub was DEAD, your shift comprised of smoking and drinking beer you didn’t pay for in the office, you included spirit gains in your wet stock result & you watered down your cordial & you didn’t pay anyone for training or in fact care about employment law. I’d love to run a pub with that job spec and I’d smash it. Senior HO like general managers etc. have their position from time served and lots of important shouting. Not managerial competency. You do not look after your management teams, it is not a people business, you are too bothered about what your important paperwork looks like and not at all about understanding really what your managers do for you and how you could make our pubs better. We had passion. We don’t any more. Please help us get it back. Running pubs through CIVID & you deliberately not acknowledging how impossible and hell that has been with restrictions has topped it. You pretended you looked after us when you didn’t. When will something be good enough.

If your staff have any health concerns you better look after them and do everything you can.
