Does there seem to be diversity at First Derivatives?

Pros

You'll gain exposure to top tier financial institutions and the junior employees are great.

Cons

Can be a truly toxic place to work. I've experienced instances of direct lying from more the recruiters, HR and senior managers. Constant avoidance regarding issues raised. The treatment of employees has close to no consistency, favoritism and nepotism are clear within a few months of working here. There zero transparency from management. Your projects are not clearly defined and you'll find yourself transitioned from roles with zero communication. Your career interests are never taken into account. There is an astounding lack of support while on client site. There is a belief in the company that these are all offset by the pro's listed above.

Advice to Management

Learn to balance employee interests with corporate interests.

The treatment of employees has close to no consistency, favoritism and nepotism are clear within a few months of working here.

How is race or ethnicity talked about at First Derivatives?

Pros

Good opportunities to work with new technologies

Cons

Not the greatest company to work for if you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community . It can feel like a very lonely and isolating company to work for. Most teams are made up of straight white men and almost all technical managers are made up of this demographic . Can be extremely hard to have your voice heard if you belong to any diversity group. There is a high turnover in staff but this is really evident if you are part of any diversity group. Probably easier to stay in the closet in order to get a promotion or work on some of the more high profile projects. Currently there is no diversity programs, except a woman’s network however the gender pay gap is unfavourable toward woman compared to similar companies . There is no investment in retaining, hiring and promoting female staff, LGBTQIA+ staff, disabled staff or staff from different races.

Advice to Management

Have a programs to help and support diversity staff. Invest more in employe welfare , it can be an extremely stressful and demeaning place to work for if you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. There should be an education piece that is run across the company to address the causal homophobia and transphobia

There is no investment in retaining, hiring and promoting female staff, LGBTQIA+ staff, disabled staff or staff from different races.

How are senior leaders perceived at First Derivatives?

Pros

There aren't any to list

Cons

Will place you in any role they want to bill client and do not care or follow up on projects and progress Poor leadership - they only promote Irish employees Bad pay and don't give raises Revolving door of employees, once new hire realizes the chaos and poor leadership they leave Not diverse, all of leadership is white and Irish decent

Advice to Management

Invest in your NYC branch hires and reward them on their success. Give leadership roles to NYC hires as they are very bright and skilled Be diversified, don't only hire white Irish kids

How is management perceived at First Derivatives?

Pros

Can decide whether to work in the office or from home (for the most part)

Cons

For hiring and promotions there is a clear preference towards the white straight men in the organisation. Particularly within tech roles, the voices of women and members of the LGBTQ community are often overshadowed and under valued. Majority of technical managers are straight men and it can be a very isolating company for women or members the LGBT community. (Daily interaction are nearly exclusively with just straight men and majority of the decision makers are straight men) . There is no diversity officer or team that focus on diversity , there is no diversity strategy or diversity policies.

Advice to Management

Should invest more in diversity to avoid the boys club mentality. Overall the business has some amazing female and LGBTQ talent but they are under appreciated and not given the same opportunities as the straight men in the business. It would be definitely worth looking at existing teams and investigating why the straight team members have been promoted over women and LGBTQ staff despite performance and experience. There is a clear discrimination issue in the business that should be identified and looked at.

Majority of technical managers are straight men and it can be a very isolating company for women or members the LGBT community.
