Some of the best and most conscientious people I ever worked with in terms of Advisors( RCs) and Team Managers, with many staff being university educated and keen to progress. As a result, there is a... significant number of people who are able to prop up services across the board. There has been a US acquisition, which brings with it technological investment that will in time benefit the delivery of work tasks and facilitate service. There is also a strong culture which looks to be monitored and embedded, so all that bodes well for the future. Very amenable city centre location right next door to Cabot Circus - but this can be disadvantageous if you are trying to save money!
Local culture is all high-level statements but little to back it up in practice. There is a facade of a progressive operation, but that is all it is. Senior management on site is very weak and... few have any real experience of understanding about what it takes to run a people-based business. As a result, the staff are forced into often bizarre rituals that were proved to be counter-productive (and ridiculed) in the 1990s. Open and blatant nepotism - promotions are handed out to social media friends, more often than not without any discernible objective process. There is a culture of cronyism that rewards failure.
Advice to Management
Start digging deeper behind the figures that are presented at management meetings and think qualitatively. A lot of the numbers are plainly misleading. A lot is hidden and when you discover the... extent of it, you will be taking the first positive steps towards maximising the potential of the business. On a final note, a senior clear-out is essential!
I worked at TMP Worldwide full-time for more than 10 years
I was with TMP for many years, and there was good reason for that. It is a flat organization, which means I had access to everyone I needed (across teams and functions and levels) to do my job well.... This takes a good deal of initiative though, as nothing here (or anywhere for that matter) is handed to you on a silver platter. I grew a ton over the years and learned a great deal. Benefits were good, work was challenging and the people were great. TMP treated me very, very well and I loved working for them. When in the "right" office, the company is a fun and engaging place to work too - lots of outings, volunteer days, parties/celebrations, silly gatherings just for fun etc. Not all offices are like this, but great community in most of them!
Managers don't seem all that well trained, and seem to be left to sink or swim with little support or training - which really impacts team synergies and trust. This is really unfortunate, b/c the... company is filled with smart and motivated employees. Processes and systems can be disorganized and sometimes it took quite a while to sort through this - which is tough when you're on the front line with a client. I also would have loved more transparency from the "top" down - about the business, changes in benefits, company priorities etc.
