What Employees Say
I worked at O'Reilly Media full-time for more than 3 years
* Safari is a neat product that empowers people to learn all over the world. It's a great thing to be a part of * Remote/WFH option for many employees * People are generally friendly & nice... to work with
* Benefits might be great for a non-tech company but they are not competitive for someone working in the tech industry * Engineering culture has deteriorated due to many good senior people and... managers leaving as well as frequent and confusing re-orgs * Very little transparency so hard to know what is going on in other teams or verticals across the company. Conversations can get rudely shut down in employee chats with little explanation other than a "we said so" type of attitude. * Senior management is very weak - I have seen other employees get bullied, treated disrespectfully, and micromanaged * Little room for advancement/promotion and small raises/bonuses, so your level and salary pretty much stay where they are from when you started
Advice to Management
To retain tech employees, they need to be empowered to build great things. Remove some of the painful, slow processes. Talk to people who are leaving (especially women & POC) and take on board... their feedback. Please learn to take criticism instead of trying to shut it down; internal criticism generally comes from a good place and from people who want to make this a better place to work. Replace uninspiring and incompetent "yes-men" senior management with promising and strong, visionary employees who deserve a chance to make a difference.

Great educational products. Everyone there is focused on building products that will help improve our educational system with a focus on keeping the teacher in the center of the classroom.
The only cons while I worked there was pricing because it was out of the range for a lot of school districts. However, they seemed to have fixed that by offering more options.
Advice to Management
The sales management and top leadership has changed, hopefully for the better. I would only suggest that Amazon keep a realistic expectation based on the education market and the timing and flow of... business in that complex arena.
