I worked at Democracy Prep Public Schools full-time for more than a year
The school offered the idea of community building, social justice education, and highlighting arts in education. The conference trip to Baltimore was fun and informational.
I worked at DPAC during the first of it opening and it was my first year teaching. Student behaviors were off the wall, and kids did not have recess. I feel like this energy was translated into their... specials classes, and I was not well equipped or supported in handling behaviors as a first year teacher. Sometimes I felt very under supported and forgotten even. I hope things have changed. The first year a school changes systems is difficult for everyone. Leadership has changed, so it all could be very different. In their K-5 classes, they heavily relied on print-out work, which was discouraging because kids got frustrated and bored with the long school hours. I left because I found out they were planning on lengthening the school day to 9 hours with still no recess for the next year. I am not sure if they followed through on that. The West Las Vegas community deserves better treatment.
Advice to Management
Shorten the school hours, give the kids recess. Support hands-on learning. Invest in the surrounding area.
