"Great agency"4 Dec 2019

Former Employee - Software Engineer

I worked at Defense Contract Management Agency full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

Great and exciting work life balance

Cons

None: salary is commensurate to work load.

"Good Job"7 Dec 2019

Current Employee - Purchasing Agent

I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time for more than a year

Pros

*A lot of really good people work there, ones that care about veterans. *Feel good about your job. *Compared to most jobs relaxed, only stressful if you make it that way. *Good understanding that... a majority of employees are also veterans and have issues to deal with at times. *Usual Federal benefits, affordable health care, TSP, pension plan, job security, good leave.

Cons

*Always a few bad eggs that don't know how to do their job or just don't care to. That puts undue pressure on others to carry their slack and you likely will because you care about the veterans that... suffer as a result of incompetent people who can't or won't do their job. *The pay scale is horrible and can't keep up with inflation. *Federal government has laws that require everyone gets a fair shot and transparency for applying for positions but the result is far from that. The majority of open position jobs already know who they want to hire. *The education to GS position without experience you can apply makes no sense. You have people who can't do a job that in order for an outside person to be able to apply for that position of super-low pay they would need a doctorate degree.

Advice to Management

Overhaul the whole Federal highering process. It's broken. I don't understand how you expect to find good employees and keep good employees.
