Sarah Lawrence College (SLC) was founded in 1928 as an institution of higher education for young women. The liberal arts school, located on a 40-acre campus in suburban New York, has been coeducational since 1968 and has an annual enrollment of some 1,200 undergraduate students and about 350 graduate students. Most of its courses are seminars limited to 15 students; the school has a student-to-faculty ratio of approximately 9-to-1, one of the lowest at any US university. SLC offers a wide range of academic concentrations, including performing arts, natural science, history, teaching, and literature. It was founded by William Lawrence, who named the school after his wife Sarah, a supporter of women's suffrage.
