What does a Public Safety Officer II do?

Public safety officers serve the public and provide services to local entities including police, firefighting, and rescue squats. They also provide public safety and law enforcement services at facilities including universities or state buildings. Public safety officers patrol assigned areas to observe and investigate suspicious behavior. They are responsible for law enforcement and apprehending suspects, and preparing incident reports. Public safety officers ensure the people and property on their designated watch are safe and respond to calls and investigate and report suspicious incidents and activities.

Public safety officers involved in an incident will secure and record evidence and interview bystanders, witnesses, and victims, and when fitting, they assist in apprehending suspects and perpetrators. They are responsible for preparing accident and crime reports and helping the public with criminal and civil issues or questions and concerns. At public gatherings, they direct traffic and maintain order. Public safety officers need a minimum high school diploma or equivalency, including a GED and certification as a law enforcement officer.

What responsibilities are common for Public Safety Officer II jobs?
  • Evaluate and provide safety and security for campus special events.
  • Investigate motor vehicle accidents that occur on campus or campus related property.
  • Establish trusted reputation throughout the organization as an effective listener, partner, and problem solver of people issues.
  • Write a variety of reports, communications, briefings, statements, etc., including to policy-making bodies.
  • Develop emergency response plans and respond to emergency situations.
  • Report to the Director of Security regarding officer's performance and compliance with NCH Employee Standards of Excellence.
  • Responsible for department motor vehicle and equipment preventive maintenance and safe operation.
  • Serve as unarmed, noncommissioned public servant to provide physical security, policy enforcement, and related non criminal law enforcement duties.
  • Analyze security reports and forwards information to appropriate staff.
  • First responder to all emergency incidents within the assigned facility.
  • Inspect outgoing parcels, as necessary to prevent theft of Hospital property.
  • Assist in fire alarm practices, evacuations and emergency operations activities.
  • Make regularly scheduled fire inspections of buildings and fire extinguishers.
  • Provide assistance to motorists with lock-outs, dead batteries and other vehicular problems.
  • Regular exposure to disagreeable conditions including inclement weather, odors and loud noises. regular standing, bending, lifting above shoulders and carrying at least 25 pounds. may perform shift work. willingness to wear and maintain uniforms, including head covering.
  • Lead prospective staff planning and development to create and retain a pipeline of talent.
  • Directly supervise and complete annual written performance reviews of Public Safety Officers assigned to their respective shift.
  • Monitor the assigned unit to ensure officer safety and to determine additional support needs.

  • Comfortable writing up incidents and reports and making judgment calls based upon findings.
  • Can maintain and update an archive.
  • Experience with software and systems such as ReACT, computing, and MOAB.
