What does a Physician Advisor do?
Physician advisors are physicians who perform case reviews to evaluate previous actions and determine whether to confirm the initial physician findings and recommendations. They are generally employed by hospitals and other medical facilities, and conduct these reviews in situations where an admission or procedure may have received an initial denial from an insurance provider. They may also conduct reviews to ensure compliance with various healthcare regulations. They often serve as a liaison between various hospital teams and personnel, including administrators, doctors, and patient advocates.
Physician advisors are typically an M.D. or D.O. with a broad range of clinical experience, and must have a valid license to practice medicine in their state. They often have a background in physician leadership or hospital administration, and must be well-versed in insurance policies and regulations.
- Lead the periodic development, review, and revision of the organizations medical standards, practices and procedures.
- Prepare white papers and briefings for meetings, to include internal and external stakeholders.
- Lead, inspire and motivate, coach and mentor your clinicians ' build relationships, modeling desirable behaviors, and occasionally seeing/treating patients.
- Directly supervise the clinical practice of advanced practice clinicians as the collaborative or supervisory physician.
- Facilitate goal accomplishment by inspiring, motivating and guiding others.
- Generate, interpret, and communicate results from in vivo preclinical/non-clinical studies to teams of biochemists, biologists, pharmacologists, program managers, and non-scientists).
- Partner with Human Resources to recruit, train, and retain medical staff, including medical leadership and providers.
- Coordinate and facilitate the development of cross-discipline programs and hospital wide initiatives.
- Recommend hiring and firing and other disciplinary actions of medical staff for review and approval of the CEO.
- Work with leaders to identify, develop and advocate for improvements, innovation, equity, and new program initiatives.
- Oversee the supervision and evaluation of staff and session physicians.
- Oversee all aspects of healthcare delivery, regulatory compliance, quality, efficiency, and the supervision of all medical providers.
- Implement a communication strategy that establishes two-way communication channels to convey strategic priorities in an effective manner that engage physicians and collaborate with stakeholders.
- Support the commitment to data-driven decision-making and leading the use of key performance indicators/metrics to bring forth positive change and improve existing processes.
- Foster continuous improvement by recognizing and rewarding behaviors that elevate performance and outcomes.
- Implement action plans to improve employee and physician engagement.
- Medical Degree.
