The roles of the Defence Forces are to defend the state against armed aggression, to aid the civil power, and to participate in multinational peace support, crisis management and humanitarian relief operations. The Defence Forces recently underwent a re-organisation with the Army moving from a three Brigade structure to a two Brigade structure with a total overall establishment for 9,500 permanent personnel across all three services. The Reserve has be re-organised to an authorised establishment of 4,069 including 200 Naval Service Reserve. The organisation now consists of permanent and reserve personnel working together as a single force concept.
