What does an Applications Scientist do?
Applications scientists plan and conduct experiments, analyze data, and summarize significant conclusions based on the results. They may also demonstrate and maintain applications and related equipment. These professionals track historical records, identify patterns, and predict outcomes. They also maintain records and organize documentation. They commonly work in a laboratory environment or research setting. These roles sometimes also encompass related tasks involving content, sales, marketing, or training.
Applications scientists typically have at least a bachelor’s degree in biology or another of the life sciences, although an advanced degree is preferred. Requires strong technical background with a biological or chemical focus. Candidates for these roles must be comfortable conducting research in a laboratory setting or interacting directly with clients and applications end users to provide training and instruction.
- Develop and own technical project plans for statements of work (SoW) that address unique customer problems.
- Assist customers with experimental design, assay design, and reporting of results.
- Provide training on and assistance with data analysis, troubleshooting, and optimization for each of these technologies.
- Help to ensure product usage and supporting key account and strategic sales efforts through technical presentations and demonstrations.
- Demonstrate how customers can expect to advance from initial pilot engagements to complete solutions with advanced workflow configuration and data collection methodologies.
- Develop, implement and manage key performance indicators for individual team members, ensuring that team performance meets annual focal goals.
- Monitor operating expenses and provide guidance to team on efficient use of budget and resources.
- Prepare and deliver customer demonstrations.
- Bachelor's Degree in engineering or computer science.
- Basic understanding of CRISPR, next generation sequencing, and genotyping.
- Ability to manage scheduling and workload with an awareness of strategic goals.
- Strong collaboration and problem solving abilities.
